Updates to the Early Years Learning Framework

In this blog post, Kirsty Crozzoli, KKTC’s National Training Quality and Process Coordinator highlights some of the changes and what service providers need to consider from ACECQA’s recent updates to the EYLF.

Following a process to refresh the national Frameworks, updated versions of both national approved Learning frameworks were released in early 2023. These new frameworks can be found here https://www.acecqa.gov.au/nqf/national-law-regulations/approved-learning-frameworks

Approved providers and their services are now encouraged to begin familiarising themselves with the updated learning frameworks and adjusting relevant aspects of their educational program and practice where needed to reflect new or amended aspects of the frameworks.

KKTC is currently working on integrating these frameworks into the CHCECE034 assessment, considering the integration timeframes of each service and the full introduction of the framework in 2024.

What are the key changes?

The main differences are a stronger connection between the frameworks and the National Quality Standard in areas such as sustainability, theoretical approaches, critical reflection, the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of being, knowing and doing, and inclusion.

Three new principles have been added to both frameworks – one which promotes collaborative leadership and teamwork, one which focuses on sustainability, and one which centres on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. The below principles reflect on contemporary theories, perspective and research concerning children’s learning, development and wellbeing.

The new principles are:

  • Secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships
  • Partnerships
  • Respect for diversity
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives
  • Equity, inclusion and high expectations
  • Sustainability
  • Critical reflection and ongoing professional learning
  • Collaborative leadership and teamwork

The updated learning frameworks also include a revised cycle of planning.

Some pointers

Kirsty highlights some practical steps for service managers to address to enable their educators to familiarise themselves with the updates.

“Our sector is very good at embracing changes in pedagogical practice and leadership in centre is critically important to build awareness amongst the whole team of educators, notably with changes contained in this update,” Kirsty said.

“Some of the initiatives centre leadership can enact include:

  1. Provide access to the document in your staff room, planning room or online resources,
  2. Review a new change at each staff meeting- thinking about how the service currently implements this and what future changes may be required,
  3. Have your educational leader spend time with each educator or each room group to discuss the changes, using the ACECQ comparison tool to review the old to new documents,
  4. Reflect on the impact the planning cycle has currently in your service, is this visible to families, are all educators involved in observing, planning, and implementing?”

Summary

ACECQA said in announcing the new framework, “Approved learning frameworks are a critically important part of the National Quality Framework (NQF).”

“They guide early childhood teachers and other educators in the design, delivery and evaluation of quality learning and development experiences for more than 1.5 million children attending over 17,000 education and care services across Australia.”

Final note – for our Victorian students and centres, no changes have been made to the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework.
