Birth Chart Analysis

Shirshodaya

Prishthodaya Signs (Rising with the rear): Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius & Capricorn. These plus Gemini are strong in the night.

Ubhayodaya Signs: Gemini & Pisces.

Traditionally, planets giving beneficial results or benefic planets are Jupiter, Venus, well-associated Mercury and waxing Moon. Malefic planets are Sun, Mars, Saturn, ill-associated Mercury and waning Moon. However, nature of the planets is also considered from lordship point of view and hence, the notion of functional benefics and malefics. Not only this, there are other considerations like karaka planets (significators). Then, there are permanent and temporary friendships among planets as per Vedic Astrology. All these various classifications make it difficult for a student of astrology to make a proper birth chart analysis.

Based on lordship, for each of the zodiac signs, the benefic, malefic and neutral planets are different. The rule adopted is – lords of ascendant and trines (5th & 9th houses) are always benefic; lords of kendras (4th, 7th & 10th houses) are malefic if these houses are owned by Jupiter, Venus, well-associated Mercury and waxing Moon;  lords of kendras (4th, 7th & 10th houses) are benefic if these houses are owned by Sun, Mars, Saturn, ill-associated Mercury and waning Moon; lords of 3rd, 6th & 11th houses are malefic; and lords of 2nd, 8th and 12th are neutral. The planets (at least 2) in combination form a Yoga which can give good or bad results as determined by the above-stated rule. The planets capable of giving benefic results are the so-called Yogakarakas.
The above table gives the benefic and malefic planets by lordship for the different rising signs (ascendants). There are several variations of the above table according to various astrological texts – some doing away with neutral planets altogether. One can only understand by studying and applying the principles to the dasa and bhukti periods of the horoscopes of known personalities and comparing with actual events. Additionally, the strength of the planets and the houses according to shadbalas (six fold strength) are to be assessed before a birth chart analysis.
