Delhi Saket court on Saturday convicted ‘Peepli Live’ co-director Mahmood Farooqui for raping a 35 year old American woman in 2015.

Quantum of sentence will be announced on August 2.

Popular writer and director was arrested last year by Delhi Police on rape charges.

Farooqui is married to director and screenwriter Anusha Rizvi, who directed the 2010 satirical comedy film Peepli (Live). Farooqui was the writer and co-director of the film produced by Aamir Khan.

A case under IPC’s Section 376 was registered against him and he was sent to a 6-day judicial custody.

According to reports, a US woman had filed a complaint against Mahmood on June 19 in South Delhi’s New Friends Colony police station. He was arrested the same day produced before a court.

Mahmood is Rhodes Scholar with degrees from Oxford, Cambridge and Delhi’s St Stephen’s Colleges. He is an alumnus of prestigious Doon School.

Born in Gorakhpur, UP Mahmood is known for his book Besieged: voices from Delhi 1857. A noted researcher-historian and a writer, Mahmood helped writer William Dalrymple in the research of the accomplished ‘The Last Mughal’.
