Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday lifted travel restrictions to Turkey and ordered normalisation of bilateral trade ties after speaking with his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan over the phone.

According to Kremlin, the breakthrough came after Erdogan sent a letter of apology
to Moscow for downing a Russian warplane near the Syrian-Turkish border last year.

Following the incident, Moscow had slapped a range of sanctions on Ankara including
embargo on some Turkish food items, ban on chartered flights, sales of tour packages to the country and end of visa-free travels.

In a statement, Kremlin said that Putin expressed “profound condolences” over Monday’s
terror attacks near the Istanbul airport that killed at least 41 people and injured over 140
others.
