The Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief and former actor Raj Babbar has offered to resign after the Congress won only 7 seats in the UP assembly polls 2017. Allied with the Samajwadi Party in UP, both parties won a total of 54 seats, while BJP and its allies won by a landslide of more than 300 seats.
Although Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi described the loss in UP by saying “In opposition, you have ups and downs. We had a little down in UP, we accept it,” he did acknowledge that structural changes are needed in the party.

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Satyavrat Chaturvedi spoke more strongly, saying “the time for surgery has passed in the Congress.”
More Congress leaders are expected to offer their resignations after the losses Congress faced in the recent assembly elections. BJP not only won outright majority in UP and Uttarakhand but also managed to form governments in Goa and Manipur where Congress had a slight lead by allying with other parties of the respective states.

Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad had earlier offered to resign after poor results in the Odisha civic elections. Babbar, however is the first to offer resignation after the assembly poll results.
Final decisions on the resignations in the party will be taken by Congress President Sonia Gandhi when she returns from her trip abroad for medical treatment.
