SL vs IND 5th ODI: Sri Lanka sets 239-run target for India

Colombo: Sri Lankan batsmen showed some solidarity in the fifth and final One-Day International (ODI) against India to post 238 runs on the scoreboard before being bundled up at the R Premadasa stadium here on Sunday.

After electing to bat first, Lankan stand-in skipper Upul Tharanga played an aggressive 48-run inning off only 34 deliveries, with the help of 9 boundaries. His opening partner Niroshan Dickwella, however, couldn’t last long and got out after adding 2 runs off 6 deliveries.

Dilshan Munaweera also failed to perform and went back after adding only 4 runs off 5 balls with one boundary. After his departure, Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews consolidated the Sri Lankan Batting and added 122 runs for the fourth wicket.

Once their partnership was broken, Lankan batting collapsed miserably and the rest of the batsmen could only add 53 runs. Milinda Siriwardana was the highest scorer in the Lankan tail-end as he added 18 runs off 13 balls with 1 four and a six.

It was a flamboyant Bhuvneshwar Kumar who claimed five wickets to dismantle a better looking Sri Lankan batting. He sent 42 runs in his 8.4 overs to register a five-for.

Jasprit Bumrah bagged two wickets for 45 runs in his 10 overs, while Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal plucked one wicket each for 40 and 36 runs, respectively.

During the course of the game, MS Dhoni became the only wicket-keeper in the history of ODI Cricket to get 100 stumpings. He surpassed Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara to achieve the feat. Akila Dananjaya became the 100th victim of Dhoni’s exceptional glove-work.

India require 239 runs to register an emphatic 5-0 series victory over the hosts.
