Emigrate to Australia Occupation Lists Explained
Medium Term Strategic Skills List

Also known as the MTSSL, Occupation List One or, as we prefer to call it; The Premier League of Australian Occupations. You can check the full MTSSL list here but as a quick indicator if you fall into any of the following occupations then you’re in the Premier League of Occupations for 2018.

Secondary School Teachers moving to Australia
Electricians emigrating down under
Plumbers wanted in Australia
Moving to Australia as a Nurse
Carpenters Immigrating
Welders heading to Australia
IT and ICT Professionals
Child Care Center Managers
Accountants Immigrating to Australia in 2018
Bricklayers in demand

You only need to make one Skilled Visa application in the name of the most eligible and strongest candidate based on occupation and points score. Its only the lead applicant that needs an occupation in demand and to score the required 60 points on the emigrate to Australia points system.

Having an occupation on the MTSSL means you might be eligible for either a 189 or 190 Visa. Both these Australian Skilled Visas have Permanent Residency status. The 189 allows you to live anywhere in Australia from day one and the 190 has an element of State Nomination which means you’re expected to live and work in the State that nominates you for a period of two years. After two years you’re obviously free to live and work anywhere in Australia just like the 189 visa.

The other occupation in demand list is called the Short Term Strategic Skills List or STSSL for short. Here at Lets Go Global we call it the Championship list because if the MTSSL is the Premier League then the STSSL is still great, just one division down in terms of Australian Immigration.

If your occupation is on the MTSSL its going to be automatically included on the STSSL. If this is the case you may be able to apply for either the 189 or the 190 visa based on how you score in the emigrate to Australia points system.

If your occupation is only on the STSSL then you’ll likely only be eligible for the 190 visa class in terms of Permanent Residency.

Why have we made the distinction above? Because when it comes to calculating your emigrate to Australia points score it could make the difference between being eligible to emigrate to Australia and not.

How to accurately navigate the emigrate to Australia points system in 2018

Emigrate to Australia Points System Stage One: Age
It goes without saying that your age affects your chances of moving to Australia. One of the common mistakes people make is thinking they can emigrate to Australia whenever they choose. For example, back in June 2017 the Australian Government changed the maximum age limit for working visas from 50 to 45 years. Overnight this effectively shattered the dreams of many tens of thousands of would be skilled migrants overnight.

Your age is timestamped at the very moment you get called forward to apply for your skilled visa. Remember, it can take anything up to two years to be called forward from the Expression of Interest database so if you’re nearing the upper age limit the recommendation of our experts is to always get the ball rolling as soon as you’re ready.

Age 18 – 24 = 25 points
Age 25 – 32 = 30 points

Age 40 – 44 = 15 points

PHD = 20 points

Emigrate to Australia Points System Stage Three: Length of Work Experience
The Skills Assessment process also verifies the amount of work experience you can claim although as a general rule the following holds true:

Emigrate to Australia Points System for Qualifications
3 to 5 years experience in the last 10 years = 5 points
5 to 8 years experience in the last 10 years = 10 points
8 years + experience in the last 10 years = 15 points

Emigrate to Australia Points System Stage Four: English Language Ability
Always a favorite subject with potential applicants looking to emigrate to Australia is the English language requirement. Many applicants question the need to take an English test to ‘prove’ ability in their native language although here at Lets Go Global we absolutely love this requirement! Why? Well, what better opportunity to gain up to 20 extra points on the emigrate to Australia points system than doing a quick exam, about your own language actually ‘in’ your own language!

Remember also that some skills assessment bodies actually require you to take an English test as part of their individual assessment criteria regardless of whether you have English as a first language.

Emigrate to Australia Points System for English Language
Good = 20 points
Medium = 10 points
Basic = 0 points

Emigrate to Australia Points System Stage Five: Points for 190 State Nomination
If you have an occupation on the MTSSL and can score 60 points above then you may have ‘Prime Facie’ eligibility for a 189 visa.

If you have an occupation on the MTSSL and can only score 55 points on the emigrate to Australia points system then you may be eligible for the 190 visa. How? When you secure State Nomination you get gifted an extra 5 points by the Sponsoring State bringing your total up to the required 60 level.

If you have an occupation on the STSSL and can score a minimum of 55 points on the emigrate to Australia points system then, just like the scenario above it looks like you’ll hit the 60 point benchmark when you receive the extra 5 points booster from your Nominating State or Territory.

Only scoring 50 points?
Don’t give up hope just yet! If the lead applicant only scores 50 on the emigrate to Australia points system then do consider the following points boost options.

Emigrate to Australia points system boost one: Consider the 489 visa. With the subclass 489 visa we can add on an amazing 10 points boost. The 489 is an initial temporary visa class which lasts for four years. After two years we may apply for the 887 PR visa class although for the first two years 489 visa holders must undertake to live in a regional area.

Emigrate to Australia points system boost two: Dual Skills Assessment. If your partner is aged under 45 and also has an occupation on any of the in demand lists then by having a skills assessment done for them (as well as the lead applicant) you’ll receive an extra 5 points boost. Therefore, if you’re scoring 50 points you can claim an extra 5 for your partners skills assessment and then an extra 5 for the 190 state nomination bringing your application up the required 60 points level.
