Are Hybrid Cars and Trucks Good for Us?

There are people in our society who will want to make you feel guilty about going somewhere like a Truck or SUV dealer to get your next new vehicle. They claim that hybrids are much better for us as a nation. But are their claims unfounded? Are hybrids really that much better for us than trucks?

The Next Best Thing

Despite the belief that hybrids emit smaller amounts of greenhouse gases, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are the “next best thing.” In fact, many people who have driven hybrids for a long distance have reported that it made them drowsy.

With their quiet motors and lack of exhaust noise, you can’t hardly tell the car is on! That could be a problem for people who want to drive at night or even during the day after a long shift at work.

Magnetic Fields

But that’s not even the half of it. The electricity that the car uses to operate the vehicle maybe isn’t good for our health either. In some studies, this exact type of magnetic field has been linked to leukemia in children and other health problems.

Organizations like the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute have also admitted the potential hazards of hybrids because the driver is exposed to long periods of electromagnetic fields. Some even liken it to living in a neighborhood where these high-voltage utility lines are present.

GM and GMC Started Pushing Hybrids in 2008

With all of the talk about hybrids and trucks, you might be wondering where GMC fits into the equation. When you hear the word “hybrid,” other companies typically come to mind. But that doesn’t mean GMC wasn’t creating hybrid as early as 12 years ago.

As a matter of fact, in 2008 GMC was the leader in hybrid vehicles if you’re looking for trucks or full-sized SUVs. During the first quarter of 2008, the automaker sold nearly 850 hybrid vehicles and about 80 percent of those were large trucks. That’s going to change, though.

Fighting to Compete

GMC was trying to increase its hybrid sales in order to compete with the other automakers. According to Eric Fedeva, GMC is going to be a serious contender in the hybrid market in the next few years. He expects the automaker to produce upwards of 50,000 hybrid models this year alone. That would be more than double the number the company made last year!

Currently, GM is producing five full hybrid vehicles. But the automaker plans to introduce three more later this year. And when the company does start producing more hybrids, it will undoubtedly attract more customers because of the popularity of trucks and full-size SUVs. With all of these things going on, there’s never been a better time to visit your local GMC truck dealer and see the fuel-efficient options available for you.
