Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) Travel Guide

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, also known as Taipei Airport due to its proximity to Taiwan’s capital, is the busiest airport in Taiwan and the 11th busiest airport in the world.

It is currently servicing all its incoming and outgoing flights with two terminals and two runways.

The airport was known as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport or CKS International Airport until 2006.

If you are traveling to Taiwan by air, the airport is your most likely point of entry. From here, you can take a bus to Taipei, Taichung, and other parts of Taiwan.

Name in Local Language

Mandarin: 臺灣桃園國際機場 (táiwān táoyuán gúojì jīchǎng)

History

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport was originally known as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport or CKS International Airport.

The old name was selected to commemorate Chiang Kai-shek, who is a former President of the Republic of China or more commonly known as Taiwan today. The name change from Chiang Kai-shek International Airport to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport took place on September 6, 2006.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport was built because Taipei Songshan Airport, the airport that was servicing Taipei, was hitting maximum capacity. Due to space limitations, there was no way to expand Taipei Songshan Airport.

Today, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport has 2 terminals, with Terminal 3 and 4 on the way. Constructions works for Terminal 3 is already underway, and you can expect it to be ready by 2020.

Key Attractions

Like many airports around the world, there is nothing much you can do while waiting for your next flight here.

Shopping

Upon your arrival at the airport or while waiting for your next flight, you can visit the many shops selling duty-free items here. The items you can find at these shops include alcohol, cosmetics, skin care products, chocolates, sweets, souvenirs and much more.

Tourism Bureau’s / Travel Information Service Counter

There is a counter providing travel information at the arrival hall of both Terminal 1 and 2.

If you are exploring Taiwan on your own, you can pick up the free brochures for destinations across Taiwan at these counters.

Feel free to ask the personnel behind these counters any question about transportation, weather, or other information related to traveling in Taiwan. They can even provide suggestions for attractions to visit based on your itinerary.

By Train

There is no direct access to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport by train.

However, travelers can still take a train on the Taiwan High-Speed Rail (HSR) or the Taiwan Railways (TR) network from different parts of Taiwan to Taoyuan before taking a bus that will bring them to the airport.

Taiwan High-Speed Rail (HSR)

Taiwan High-Speed Rail is the most convenient and affordable transportation option to travel around Taiwan in the least amount of time possible.

To show how fast an HSR train is, an HSR train ride from Zuoying, the southernmost HSR station in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, only takes about 1 hour and 36 minutes to reach Taoyuan. On the other hand, a Taiwan Railways train ride from Kaohsiung to Taoyuan consumes around 4 to 5 hours. Driving between those two points will also take three and a half hours or longer, depending on traffic conditions.

Travelers from different parts of Taiwan can take an HSR train to HSR Taoyuan Station before boarding either of the buses below to Taoyuan International Airport, or vice versa:

  • UBUS (統聯客運): Bus Number 705.
  • Taoyuan Bus (桃園客運): Bus Number 5089.

Exit 5 of HSR Taoyuan Station is where you can find the bus pickup area.

Taiwan Railways (TR)

Taiwan Railways has the broadest train network in Taiwan even though they are slower than an HSR train.

A TR train can bring you to Taoyuan Train Station. From there, you can take UBUS (統聯客運), Bus Number 706 to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport or vice versa.

By Taxi

Aside from taking public buses from places like Taipei Main Station or Taichung Train Station, you can also reach Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport with a cab. Of course, the journey will be more comfortable, especially if you are traveling with seniors or young children.

Taking a taxi in Taiwan is very convenient. Do take note, however, that most taxi drivers in the country cannot speak or read English. To make sure you arrive at the correct destination, always show the driver the name of your destination in Mandarin. If you do not have it, the front desk of any hotel, especially those in bigger cities, will be able to help by writing it down for you.

Taxi fares in Taiwan follow the same metered rate throughout the country, and passengers are responsible for paying highway tolls. All taxi drivers should use the meter unless you are chartering a taxi for a day.

To take a taxi at either Terminal 1 or 2 of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, get yourself to the Arrival Hall at either of the terminals. Once you are there, you should see overhead signs pointing you towards the taxi stand near the pickup and dropoff area.
