Just 100 miles south of the Arizona border, the recent and tragic deaths of 3 women and 6 children are causing many to ask one fundamentally big question – “Is Mexico Safe?”
In reference to Sonoma state where the ambush occurred, Larry Gelwix, the Getaway Guru told in a recent KUTV interview, “Nobody goes there. Nobody on a vacation or tourists go there.” Gelwix also said, “It should not upset people’s Travel plans” and that “…it doesn’t affect the tourist areas – Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Mazatlán, Cabo San Lucas…those are perfectly safe.” How can this be?
Just like the United States, Mexico covers a large area. There is approximately 2,300 miles between Sonora State and Cancun, about the same distance between Utah and Connecticut. While it is recommended to use common sense and caution no matter where you travel to, there are a couple of tools you can use to help you decide where it is safe to visit.
The U.S. Department Website (Travel.State.Gov) is a phenomenal resource to use. On the main page of the website, click on Find International Travel Information. On the right-hand side of the page, you can type in the country or area or want to learn more about. Or, click on View All Travel Advisories to get a general idea of safe places around the world. The website uses a 4-level travel advisory system:
- Exercise normal precautions
- Exercise increased caution
- Reconsider travel
- Do no travel

Not only can you learn about Travel Advisories and help you get answers to those important questions such as – Is Mexico Safe? – you can also get other information including visa requirements, location of embassies and consulates, and recommended vaccinations.
Another great resource to utilize is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). You can enroll in this program at Step.State.Gov. STEP allows you to stay informed of current information and provides updates on country safety situations. The program is also a safe way family and friends can contact you in case of an emergency.
