With the onset of spring down under, warmer days, clear skies and cool nights offer an ideal time to discover Australia’s secret campsites and hidden gems of New South Wales.
On Australia’s south east coast, New South Wales has amazing coastal and bush Camping spots that remain under the radar and make an ideal getaway. These secret spots with unique locations and easy access to beautiful beaches, stunning national parks and pristine wilderness environments are truly the best in camping locations, and should be on your list of must visit places.
Mimosa Rocks National Park
Camp by the beach and among the banksia trees at Picnic Point campground in Mimosa Rocks National Park. Nestled beside two beautiful sandy beaches, there’s always something exciting to look forward all year round at the campground. Choose your campsite, grab your rod and find the perfect catch to bring to your barbeque.
The campground is also perfect for whale watching, so don’t forget to bring your binoculars for spectacular close up views. Swim in crystal clear waters and enjoy scenic views of the stunning Sapphire Coastline. By the end of the day, fall asleep to the sounds of the crashing waves and be ready to do it again the next day. The serenity is a prized plus.
Wollemi National Park
Outside of Mudgee in the Wollemi National Park, is the pristine Dunns Swamp. Set on the banks of the Cudgegong River, and nestled among striking sandstone pagoda rock formations, Dunns Swamp is a nature lovers dream. Set up your camp in the picturesque woodlands of the swamp and prepare yourself for a truly tranquil getaway. Escape the heat and join an illuminating tour of the beautiful Glow Worm tunnel.
Canoe alongside the serene waterways of the swamp for a peaceful cruise. You may also find animals wandering such as wallabies, purple swamp hens, and if you’re lucky, you may even see shy long-necked turtles and platypus. With plenty of walking tracks, canoeing and swimming spots available, you’ll be spoiled for choices on this paradise.
Corynnia Station
Camp under the stars and experience a true Australian outback station stay at Corynnia Station near Hay in NSW. On this working farm, you will discover a wide number of activities and surprises for the “real” Australian experience. Beautiful farmstay cottages are located within the lush Garden Oasis, surrounded by fabulous sculptures created by sculptor Kim Gibbs.
There is also a pool and tennis court along with outdoor seating and dining areas within the garden for all guests. Camp under the ancient black box tree on the edge of a 1,000 acre dry swamp and see the milky way stars right above you. Delicious, simple hamper dishes featuring homegrown and local produce are also available by arrangement. Corynnia is also pet friendly, where guests are invited to bring their dogs for a fun run. From farm tours, native wildlife, and recreational activities, there’s so much to see and do at Corynnia Station.
Point Perpendicular
The spectacular and secluded Honeymoon Bay at Point Perpendicular on the South Coast allows camping on weekends and during holidays only. It is a must see destination for spending time with family or a peaceful fishing trip. Allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, this rustic bush camp site is a true bush camping experience and just moments to the beaches of Jervis Bay. Camping is available on most days, but is closed for Defence exercises during certain times of the year. Be sure to bring your own equipment and supplies, but portable toilets, recycling bins, and garbage bins are provided.
Lakesea Caravan Park Durras
An unknown gem, Lakesea Caravan Park Durras near Batemans Bay has grassy shaded sites with BBQ drums and a campground that is geared up for the more novice camper. They offer a camp kitchen with free gas BBQs, fridge and oven. There is also a king-size tennis court and mountain bike hire, with are just a few of the large amenities that will make you wanting to stay longer. Just moments to Durras Beach and Lake Durras, you can enjoy surfing, kayaking, fishing and bushwalking in the nearby Murramarang National Park and encounter pockets of rainforests and a diversity of plants. Mountainous backdrops paired with crystal clear waters amongst the untouched sand make this an ideal place for canoeing. You will become overwhelmed by the amount of scenery and activities for an unforgettable experience.
Tasmania’s Three Capes Track
If you’re looking for more camping and hiking experiences down under, head to Tasmania’s Three Capes Track. The peninsula is famous for its bushwalking experience, which takes hikers through a “bush” – the Australian wilderness and everything around it. Tasmania is famous for its rock formations, sea cliffs, and local animals that will have you wanting to stay for more. If you decide to stay at one of their cabins, they are provided with heating, solar-powered lighting, basic kitchen, and running water to ensure the most comfortable stay.
Every route has its own story to tell, which will make your hiking journey one to remember. It is one of the few places where you can experience the remote, serene sights of Australia at its best all year round.
