Improve System Performance / Speed

To Improve system performance / speed, we need to first identify the root cause.

Solution 1: Identify and end processes consuming high memory

1. Open the 'Task Manager' by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete

2. Move to the 'Processes' tab and click 'Memory' column header; this will sort processes from high to low. Process with the highest memory usage to appear on top.

3. Select processes with high memory usage and click 'End Process' at the bottom right of the task manager.

*Make sure you do not end system processes and other critical processes such as explorer.exe*

This will increase your RAM and improve speed. You can monitor this by going to the 'Performance' tab of Task Manager.

Solution 2: Disable Start-Up Items and Services you no longer require

We all install software and applications, but these software may start running in the background without your knowledge and consume memory as a result.

1. Press the windows button and type msconfig to open 'System Configuration'

2. Move to the Startup tab and select items you do not want to start after restart. After Selection click 'Disable All'

3. In the Services tab, you can disable Services which are running in the background with the help of status column

Solution 3: Check Windows for Errors and Automatically Fix these Errors

1. Move to the explorer and right click your Windows Drive (By default it is C:)

2. Click on properties and move to the 'Tools' tab

3. Under the 'Error-checking' section, Click check now

Make sure 'Automatically fix file system errors' option is checked; click Start

There are many software available for download that may or may not improve system performance, but i would recommend to try solutions listed above as these are in-built tools from windows to help you tweak your configuration.

With Windows 10, there are further tweaks available!

For that, stay tuned...
