Erik H. Erikson was born. A radical thinker and pioneering psychoanalyst whose influential ideas on human development extend well beyond the confines of psychoanalysis.

Erikson is best known for his psychosocial theory that a person's sense of identity is shaped through encountering a specific psychological struggle at every major stage of life from infancy to old age. Erikson is also famous for coining the phrase identity crisis.
