Dec 17, Max Wertheimer: Today in the History of Psychology (17th December 1924)




Max Wertheimer presented a landmark lecture 'Úber Gestalttheorie' (On Gestalt Theory) to the Kant Society in Berlin, Germany. Considered a breakthrough account of Gestalt Theory, particularly in relation to its influence and application within psychology; a defining highlight of Wertheimer's lecture was his statement that:

'The basic thesis of gestalt theory might be formulated thus: there are contexts in which what is happening in the whole cannot be deduced from the characteristics of the separate pieces, but conversely; what happens to a part of the whole is, in clear-cut cases, determined by the laws of the inner structure of its whole.'
