Tags: metal hplc jesse

The 2023 Hplc International Symposium is a highly regarded conference focused on liquid phase separations and related technologies, particularly in conjunction with mass spectrometry. The program covers a wide range of topics, including chromatographic separations, detection principles, methodological advancements, and applications in various fields. The symposium features workshops, tutorials, plenary and keynote lectures by renowned scientists, as well as a large exhibition showcasing the latest innovations from leading vendors. The upcoming HPLC Symposium will be held in historic Düsseldorf, Germany at the Congress Center Düsseldorf (CCD).

SilcoTek's Dr. Jesse Bischof will be presenting "Trace Corrosion of Metallic Components from Common Mobile Phase Additives and the Deleterious Impact on Separations" as a part of “Poster Session 2”. He will be discussing the importance of having a robust and inert fluid pathway in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems, particularly as separation and purification techniques allow more sensitive and efficient results. Traditional HPLC instruments are made from stainless steel, PEEK, or ceramic components, which may have active sites on their surfaces that require regular passivation or priming. Stainless steel is not considered "bio-inert" and can lead to issues such as leaching of Metal ions into the flow path, which can cause problems in biological analysis and impact the performance of certain compounds. To address these challenges, Jesse will present the advantages of using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coated metal hardware as an alternative approach. SilcoTek's coating technology aims to reduce the interaction of the metal with the solution while still utilizing metal alloys. Our research and development team conducted experiments to investigate the leaching of metal ions into water, methanol, and acetonitrile when in direct contact with different metals such as stainless steel, titanium, MP35N, and Hastelloy. They used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure the amount of metal leached. The results showed that CVD coatings can effectively reduce the concentration of leached metals to zero. The coated hardware demonstrated improved performance and reduced interactions with metal compounds, offering a potential solution for HPLC systems that require high sensitivity and minimal metal interference.
