Ingrid Nembhard named the Hiscock Professor of Public Health

Ingrid M. Nembhard, newly named as the Ira Vaughn Hiscock Associate Professor of Public Health, focuses her research on organizational learning in health care, with an emphasis on understanding the effects of intra- and inter-organizational relationships, leadership behavior, team learning strategies, and project management on quality improvement efforts and clinical outcomes. Her appointment will be effective on June 30.

Nembhard integrates knowledge of organizational behavior, organizational theory, and health services research to answer questions about managing learning, change, and innovation within health care delivery organizations. Her research combines qualitative and quantitative methodologies to investigate issues in health care management.

Nembhard is currently studying care coordination in primary care groups as a strategy to improve patient and staff experiences, and the contributors to high performance in challenging work environments. With doctoral students, she is also investigating creativity in health care organizations and the role of social influence in clinicians’ use of electronic health records. She recently completed a study of the implementation of evidence-based practices in U.S. hospitals.

A 1997 graduate of Yale College, Nembhard received her M.S. from Harvard University School of Public Health. She earned her Ph.D. in health policy and management, with a concentration in organizational behavior, from Harvard through a joint program between Harvard Business School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

In addition to her new appointment, Nembhard also serves as associate professor of management at the Yale School of Management and associate director for the Health Care Management Program at Yale. For her achievements in the classroom, Yale School of Public Health named her Teacher of the Year in 2011, and Yale School of Management presented her with an MBA for Executives Teaching Award in 2014 and 2016.
