PhD Studentship in Advanced Database Technologies
Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship in Advanced Database Technologies, starting in the academic year 2016/17.
The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck is a world-class centre of expertise in information and knowledge management, intelligent systems and data analysis. The Department also has major interdisciplinary activities in life sciences informatics, data analytics and technology-enhanced learning.
In the REF 2014, almost all of the Department's research activity was judged as being of international significance, with 21% being world-leading, 47% internationally excellent, and 20% internationally recognised. For research outputs specifically, 32% were judged as being world-leading, 45% as internationally excellent and 16% as internationally recognised.
The PhD studentship is fully funded covering fees at Home/EU rate, plus an annual stipend of £16,296

The studentship is open to full-time home, EU and international students. Candidates must submit a college application form for a place in the MPhil/PhD programme and clearly state in the application that they are interested in Advanced Database Technologies. Candidates will be considered for admission first, and for the award only after they have been offered a place in the programme.
About the PhD studentship and the research area
A fully-funded PhD studentship (at the Home/EU fees level and maintenance grant) is available in the area of Advanced Database Technologies, funded 50% by Neo Technologies and 50% by Birkbeck's School of Business, Economics, Informatics. The topic of this PhD will be to investigate the use of indexing and other optimisation techniques for speeding up query evaluation and analytics in graph databases. This research will be part of a broader ongoing research programme involving Neo Technologies, Birkbeck and Eindhoven University of Technology. The empirical work will be undertaken in collaboration with Neo Technologies.
The PhD student will be supervised jointly by Professor Alex Poulovassilis ([email protected]) from Birkbeck, whom applicants may contact for further information, and Dr George Fletcher from TU Eindhoven.
Who is eligible?
Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 degree in computing, or in a branch of science or engineering with strong numerical ability and programming skills.
Candidates should submit a research statement explaining their interest in the above area, and attend an interview either in person or online.
