Call for Industry Papers

The 25th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge
Management (CIKM 2016) will be held from Oct 24 – 28, 2016 in Indianapolis,
USA. CIKM is a top-tier ACM conference in the areas of information
retrieval, knowledge management, and databases. Since 1992, it has
successfully brought together leading researchers and practitioners from the
three communities. The purpose of the conference is to identify challenging
problems facing the development of innovative knowledge and information
systems, and to shape future research directions through the publication of
high quality, applied and theoretical research findings. In CIKM 2016, we
will continue the tradition of promoting collaboration among multiple areas.
We encourage submissions of high quality full- and short- research papers on
all topics in the general areas of databases, information retrieval, and
knowledge management. This year we are highlighting the advances in
frontiers and applications of big data sci!
ence. Lying at the intersection of databases, information retrieval and
knowledge management, CIKM is uniquely placed to deliver fresh perspectives
on big data science.

We invite submissions describing implementations of information retrieval,
machine learning, data mining and database techniques in industry settings.
Our primary emphasis is on papers that advance the understanding of, and
show how to deal with, practical issues related to the deployment of
analytics methods in real-world applications. This track also highlights key
learnings and new research challenges posed by real world implementations
such as:
Engineering challenges encountered while implementing at scale Design of
training/evaluation datasets Design of offline and online evaluation
methodologies Novel previously unsolved problems Novel practical solutions
to known problems Experience papers describing learnings and best practices
In addition, opinion/vision papers and papers highlighting interesting
negative results will also be considered for the short paper track.
Submissions may belong to a diverse set of application areas including, but
not limited to web search, e-commerce, entertainment, medicine, healthcare,
defense, public policy, engineering, law, manufacturing, telecommunications,
and government etc.

Submitted papers will go through a competitive peer review process. The
Industry Track is distinct from the Research Track in that submissions
either discuss real-world implementations of information systems or insights
from real datasets with obvious industry impact.

Submissions must clearly identify one of the following three areas they fall
into: "deployed", "discovery", or "emerging". The criteria for submissions
in each category is same as KDD industry track, as detailed below:
Deployed: Must describe deployment of a system that solves a non-trivial
real-world problem. The focus should be on describing the problem, its
significance, decisions and tradeoffs made when making design choices for
the solution, deployment challenges, and lessons learned.
Discovery: Must include results that are discoveries with demonstrable value
to an industry organization. This discovered knowledge must be "externally
validated" as interesting and useful; it can not simply be a model that has
better performance on some traditional evaluation metrics such as accuracy
or area under the curve.
Emerging: Submissions do not have to be deployed but must have clear
applications to industry to distinguish them from CIKM research papers. They
may also provide insight into issues and factors that affect the successful
use and deployment of data mining and data analytics. Papers that describe
enabling infrastructure for large-scale deployment of data mining and
analytics techniques also fall in this category.
Evaluation and decision criteria
Submissions are reviewed in a single-blinded manner and assessed based on
their novelty, technical quality, potential impact, and clarity. For papers
that rely heavily on empirical evaluations, the experimental methods and
results should be clear, well executed, and repeatable. Authors are strongly
encouraged to make data and code publicly available whenever possible.

Paper Submissions
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished full-length (10 page)
and short (4 page) industry papers that are not previously published,
accepted to be published, or being considered for publication in any other
forum. Full-length papers should satisfy the standard requirements of
top-tier international conferences. Short papers should describe interesting
ongoing work, new discoveries and insights, or summaries of significant
projects, and be material that is suited to poster presentation rather than
oral presentation.

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically, in PDF format and formatted
using the ACM camera-ready templates. Full papers cannot exceed 10 pages in
length and short papers cannot exceed 4 pages in length. Papers should be
submitted through the CIKM 2016 online submission system. Submissions of
identical or closely related work to more than one track will be treated as
duplicate submissions.

The Program Committee of each track will review both the full-length papers
and short papers submitted into the track. Submissions will receive an
"accept", "reject" or "accept as short paper" decision based on the version
that was submitted. Based on reviewer feedback, some full-length submissions
may be accepted as short papers for poster presentation.

At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference
prior to the listed Final Version date, and is expected to attend the
conference and present the work as scheduled in the conference program.
Short paper presentations will be via a poster session, and authors will be
expected to prepare and present a poster in the usual manner. Work that is
not presented at the conference by one or more of its authors may be removed
from the ACM digital library and may be removed from the final version of
the proceedings.

Call for Demonstration

We invite submissions of demonstrations proposals on all topics in the
general areas of databases, information retrieval, and knowledge management,
especially demonstrations bridging these areas, or presenting new
perspectives in these areas. Selection criteria will include the originality
of the application identified, appeal of the system for interactive
demonstration, novelty of practical insights, and the multidisciplinary
nature of the submission. We encourage submissions from both academia and
industry.

Demonstration papers must be submitted electronically, in PDF format through
the CIKM 2016 online submission system and formatted using the ACM
camera-ready templates. Demonstration papers cannot exceed 3 pages in
length. Authors are strongly encouraged to include a URL for the web site of
the system, or a URL to a 2-3 minute video demonstrating the system, or a
1-page appendix containing the screenshots of the system. The review process
for demonstration submission will be single-blind.
