THE DATING PROJECT: DVD Review and Giveaway

A few years ago, Boston College Professor Kerry Cronin noticed a decreased dating trend among her undergraduate students. “And I thought, ‘Well, this is crazy.’ So, I started asking students to go on ‘traditional dates’ as part of an extra-credit assignment. However, the act of going on a date was a bit more complicated than she had imagined. The preferred method of Social Interaction (texting) combined with the predominant “hook-up” culture had all but obliterated basic social interaction skills. And so, THE DATING PROJECT began.

THE DATING PROJECT is a documentary that follows Boston College philosophy professor Dr. Kerry Cronin and five modern day singles (18 – 40) from various cities in the United States in their quest to find authentic love and meaningful relationships. The DVD reveals that for the first time in history, over 50% of Americans are single. That statistic was a little mind-boggling for me. Another astonishing detail revealed in the DVD is that most single people, regardless of their age don’t know how to meet other singles (other than social media websites) nor do they know how to date or develop a relationship with the opposite sex. It’s true that I have been out of the dating scene for a while (26 years ago, this month), but I did not realize that the world had changed so drastically.

THE DATING PROJECT was a very timely film. Despite the fact that I am not a single in this generation, I was able to understand and empathize with the dilemma of the singles in this film. I could easily relate to one professional woman from New York, who spent most of her time focusing on her career and church. She wanted to date, to develop a relationship, and marry, but it was difficult with all the hours she devoted to her work. (This was me before I met my husband.) Finally, she just had to take time out for herself and her goals outside of work.

It was both fascinating and gratifying to see how each of the singles evolve over time as they engage in Dr. Cronin’s dating philosophy and discover more meaningful and fulfilling relationships. This is a must-see movie for all singles today who would like to meet someone special in person and return to the “old-fashioned” days of dating. It brings hope and direction to those who are seeking companionship, friendship, and love.

THE DATING PROJECT is the new documentary from Paulist Productions, Mpower Pictures and Family Theater Productions. It is available now on DVD at Walmart and Target, among other venues.

I will be giving away TWO DVDs of THE DATING PROJECT, beginning June 21 at Midnight.
