“My Name is Khan” – Most Controversial Hindi Movie of This Year

The movie opens with Shah Rukh claiming, “My name is Khan. And I am not a terrorist” and the movie ends with the same line being repeated by King Khan, “My name is Khan. And I am not a terrorist”. So whats in the movie? A story of Rizwan Khan who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, a type of Autism but he is very good at learning and remembering things and brilliant at repairing almost everything! The movie begins with Rizwan being detained by San Francisco security at the airport, as a co-passenger is suspicious when he is reciting phrases in Urdu. That’s when he tells the security officials that he is travelling to Washington DC to meet Mr. President and tell him that though he is a Khan, but he is not a terrorist.

Movie shows the actual story in flashbacks as Rizwan keeps thinking about his past while on his journey to meet Mr. President. He makes a few friends, a few enemies on his way, helps a few people, scares away a few people. A simple story about world changing their perspective towards the Muslims post 9/11, which was tragic as well as wrong doing of a few select people, but the whole religious community, had to pay the price!

Performances were fine, could have been better. Kajol came back on screen after a gap of couple of years and she was good, though there were moments when you would expect a little more from her. She screams a lot in this movie, so beware! No extraordinary performance worthy of best actor awards, music is good to listen to. Cinematography was good, one scene where they show the rising sun over the city of San Francisco was breathtaking. All and all an okay movie, one time watch, but if you are not a Shah Rukh Khan or Kajol fan, you may give it a skip and wait till it comes on the television.
