Robert Addison and Alice (Hipp) Means

When Second Presbyterian Church was organized in a meeting room in the Washington Street Presbyterian Church (i.e. First) on March 17, 1892 there were twenty-seven members including Robert Addison and Alice (Hipp) Means.  However, Robert’s membership at Second was short lived because the session minutes for June 9, 1895, show that he, his wife Alice is not mentioned, was dismissed to the Washington Street Presbyterian Church.  From the session minutes, it appears that Mrs. Means remained a member of Second while her husband was a member of Washington Street.  The obituaries for the Means comment that they were active members of Second Church at the times of their deaths.  R. A. Means returned to Second when he was received by certificate of transfer from First Church during the session meeting of Feb. 18, 1912.  On June 2, 1912, R. A. Means, R. L. Simpson, and George A. Buist were elected elders.  Mr. Means and R. L. Simpson, who both had been ordained elders previously, were installed two weeks later, but George A. Buist requested a delay of his ordination and installation for reasons that were not specified.  Professor George Buist, who taught chemistry at Furman, was ordained and installed on Dec. 22, 1912.
