I have visited many homes in my life. Some homes are bright and peaceful, while other homes are dark, untidy, and chaotic. Some homes I would love to stay and visit all day—actually to be honest, I would like to move right in. But the others, I make excuses to leave as soon as possible. Why is that?

As I reflect these two types of homes, I have to wonder if the attitude of the homemaker is reflected in the atmosphere of her home. I wonder if it is the case for every single home. Do our homes take on the attitude of us—the homemaker? In the case of my past home-visiting-experiences, I can see a connection. An undeniable connection even.

I love being at my mom’s home. The Atmosphere of her home is intensely beautiful. Not because it is decorated with high end furniture, nor is it a million dollar mansion. Nope, it is a simple home filled with cozy yet simple furnishings. But, it is the life-force of the home that makes it feel so beautiful and cozy. Mom often prays aloud, she usually has worship music playing, and conversations with her are always uplifting and encouraging. She never complains! She is all about doing Father’s perfect will.

I want my home to be like moms—one that reflects the true nature of GOD—Jesus Christ.

I wonder what the atmosphere of my home is. When others enter do they feel grace and love? Do they feel judgment and unease? Do they feel joy or anger? Does my home reflect the attitude of me?

What do you think other’s feel when they enter your home?

So, here’s the million dollar question: How can we effectively change the atmosphere of our homes?

I have a strong suspicion that we need to learn from my mom.

Mom prays out loud every day and all throughout the day. So, what if we started praying aloud over our children, over our spouse, about our finances, and over our nation? What if we started praying for our neighbors, for Father’s perfect will in our life, and for the body of Christ—all day long? If we did, then our homes would become homes of prayer. In the Old Testament, GOD’s holy temple was called a house of prayer. I want my home to be a house of prayer!

My mom also plays worship music throughout the day. What if we did the same? Then, not only would our homes become a ‘house of prayer’, but our homes would also become a ‘house of worship’ too.

Mom never complains! EVER! Her life has not been easy. She just recently beat breast cancer. Thank you Jesus!! Weekly treks to the doctor and she did not spew one negative word. She could have easily given in to the blues—but she valiantly fought them off. What if you and I were able to stop the complaining and negativity? What would happen to the feel of our homes?

Mom is an incredible servant. She is 82 and is a foster parent to young children. She is the most Christ-like woman I know. What if you and I became more Christ-like in our daily life? What if we served others like HE served? What if we thought and loved and spoke like HIM?

So, to answer the earlier question—‘how can we change the atmosphere of our home?’  I believe it’s when we change who we are—into who Christ is. When we transform our attitudes into those that reflect Christ’s attitudes, our home takes on the atmosphere of the Messiah of all mankind—Jesus—the beautiful holy Son of the Most High GOD!

That is what I want for my home. That is what I want for your home too.
