Mum Bett was the first Black slave to file and win a freedom suit in Massachusetts thereby making slavery unconstitutional in the state of Massachusetts in 1781. The Massachusetts constitution, article 1 clearly states: “All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; that of acquiring, possessing, and protecting property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness.” Despite this fact, slavery was legal in the state.  Until in 1780 when Mum Bett went to a public reading of the constitution and heard the words above.  She found a lawyer and filed suit believing that those words in that constitution applied to her.  She won her freedom, helped to abolish slavery in her state and changed her name to Elizabeth Freeman.
