Hidden in Plain Sight

Last night the 2017 Oscars aired and it was politically and emotionally charged.  Minority actors were nominated in almost every category, a new feat for the academy.  But filmmakers and artists from other countries were on edge due to the new political climate in America. But at the end of the day, this was also about individuals.  Like Viola Davis, who thanked her working-class parents for their sacrifices that allowed her to pursue her dream. I was particularly moved by the honoring of Katherine Johnson, one of the real-life Hidden Figures.  At almost 100 years old, she sat on a stage and got a standing ovation from Hollywood, many with tears in their eyes.  The tears welled up in my eyes because here sat a woman who contributed to the history of America; the Space Race was one of the things that set America up as a superpower.  Yet she never received any credit in the history books or anywhere else really for that matter.  All because of her gender and race and someone else’s inability to see past both.
