The Acceptable Year

Tags: debt jubilee

When I was younger, I had to have the latest technology.  And I learned how to use it easily and quickly, often not reading much of an instruction book. But things have changed now that I am in my forties. I can wait to get the latest gadget and when I finally give in and get it, I only know how to do the bare minimum. No bells and whistle for me any more.

But when it comes to your salvation, don’t cut any corners.  Read the instruction book (the Bible) cover to cover.  Utilize every benefit that comes with salvation.  Learn about ever blessing you are entitled to.  Find out what comes in your arsenal as a Christian, the armor, the weapons, gifts and talents available to you.  And the longer you walk with God the more things you will discover.

Here’s one I even missed myself.  Jesus went into the synagogue on the Sabbath and read the following out loud to the congregation:

“”The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.’ And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.And he began to say unto them, ‘this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.’” (Luke 4:18-21).

This scripture originally occurs in Isaiah 61:2. I have read it several times and honestly never looked too much into the line about the acceptable year of the Lord. I kind of took it at face value.  However, this one line is quite powerful. The acceptable year of the Lord is a real thing.  It’s the year of Jubilee. During the year of Jubilee, slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts would be forgiven, and the mercies of God would be in abundance.

This used to occur seven Sabbaths of years, or seven times seven years. But Jesus basically tells us in Luke that through salvation, every year is Jubilee for those that believe in Him.  The reason why it wasn’t enough for Jesus to stop at the things He’d listed already like recovery of sight, healing to the brokenhearted and deliverance for captives is that Jubilee represented another kind of freedom.

In Biblical days, debt was a type of bondage and a reproach upon a family. In fact, God says the borrower becomes the lender’s slave (Proverbs 22:7).  This was literal during that time. If a debt was owed, often a family member would become enslaved to pay the debt.  But in the year of Jubilee, they were released from the debt and from the slavery by God.

Now fast forward to today. Through salvation, Jesus Christ has set us free from the bondage of debt. So many of us miss this. If you are facing insurmountable debt, know that Jesus has set you free from this debt. That means that God has the solution to the debt and He has to take care of it because we live in a perpetual state of Jubilee through the work of the cross.

That means that God will supply a means for your debt to be handled to set you free from the weight of it. You must pray and seek His guidance on how to handle the debt. And not worry about it but trust that He will see you through it. And as He works on your debt, commit yourself to becoming a good steward over all that God gives you.

We are not to be slaves to debt. That means that if we truly latch on to our Jubilee, we will understand that we don’t always need credit for everything. God knows how to give us houses debt free. He knows how to give us cars with no long-term payments. He knows how to give us employment that feels less like slavery and more like purposeful work.

This is a part of the work of Christ for us who believe on Him. If we would just grasp this blessing, imagine the debt that would be cleared, the generational curses of poverty and slavery that would be broken off  so many families.

Through Christ, it is your time of Jubilee! Stop worrying and start worshiping!
