Manifest destiny, in its most basic sense, was the idea that American settlers had a divine mission to Settle the West. To put it in basic English, people believed that it was God’s will and the country’s responsibility to settle the Western United States.  Now of course in reality, there were serious, legitimate political agendas underlying the idea and there was not a national consensus on the concept at the time.

But I believe it would be shortsighted to not consider the concept has validity. God had a plan for this land to become the United States and He chose people who would take on the burden of settling the land much like when He sent Israel to settle into the Promised Land.

And a few decades later, men like J. P. Morgan, Rockefeller and Carnegie would bring electricity, steel and oil to the forefront of the US economy. These families created American wealth and through their industry created the working class and eventually the middle class. The US grew exponentially and patented inventions that still exist today.

No matter what the opinion of them today, they were used to advance mankind in a positive way. The take home point is that your life plays a part in history. Now we won’t all end up in a history book but we are no less interconnected to people we will never meet. God can use you to create something that will bless mankind. God can give you a burden to move forward into uncharted waters.

Your life, your testimony of how God saved you and changed your life can lead another person out of bondage and mental pain. Your prayers can set up future generations of your family to be blessed.

You are not insignificant. Your choices matter. How you live your life matters beyond the people you know right now. God promised Abraham that He would make a nation from his seed.  Every choice Abraham made impacted millions of people including us today. Christians are the spiritual seed of Abraham. If Abraham had chosen not to believe God, things would have been quite different for many, many generations of people.

God formed you in His image, made you for His good pleasure. You are not here by happenstance but instead your existence is strategic in God’s plan of salvation for all mankind.  You matter more than you know!
