For Our Father’s Eyes Only

DAILY THOUGHT: FOR OUR FATHER’S EYES ONLY

In the first verse of this week’s Bible passage Jesus encourages us to be so eager to love and please God that we do everything for God’s eyes alone.

To be sure there are often other eyes watching what we do, sometimes very closely, but we are not seeking to win the approval of those around us with our good deeds. There is certainly nothing wrong with others seeing what we do. Jesus is not saying that we must hide our good deeds, although we may do so in certain circumstances.

The point that Jesus wants to make strongly concerns the motivations of our hearts for doing what we do. As his followers, he wants us to learn how to live for our Father’s eyes only.

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST:

Lord, help me become more generous.

DAILY PRACTICE:

Begin with the new daily prayer request.

Read slowly the Bible passage for the week (Matthew 6:1–4). Meditate today on the first sentence: “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

Take some time to reflect with the Lord about your motivations for doing good deeds. Share these reasons with him as honestly as you can and listen to what he says to you.

Matthew 6:1 – 4
1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
