The Keys to Promotion

Most of us probably want a Promotion. We want to step into a place of influence to fulfill our destinies. We think of Joseph from the bible and wonder how we can be like him, to be in a place of influence in the most powerful kingdom during his time. Or we could think of King David and wonder how we can be like him in a place of authority as King over God’s chosen nation.

In The Supernatural Ways of Royalty, Kris Vallotton teaches us how we can receive a promotion. Here are the 2 keys to promotion:

1. Submit to Authority

When we look at Joseph, we see that he went through a process before becoming the Prime Minister of Egypt. He was a son of Jacob, but he got sold by his brothers to slave traders and he became a slave. In Potiphar’s house, everything Joseph did prospered and he was promoted to chief attendant. Joseph was placed in charge of his master’s household. However, his master’s wife accused him of making sport of her and he was thrown into prison. In prison, God granted Joseph favor with the prison warden and Joseph was put in charge of the prison. During his time in prison, Joseph interpreted the Cupbearer and Baker’s dream. The dreams were fulfilled as interpreted by Joseph but the Cupbearer forgot about Joseph and he remained in prison. Finally, Pharaoh had a dream and the Cupbearer remembered Joseph and recommended Joseph to Pharaoh. Pharaoh summons Joseph to interpret his dream. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream and Pharaoh saw that Joseph had wisdom and discernment in him and appoints Joseph as the Prime Minister of Egypt.

Submit to authority

Through every step of this long journey to his promotion and fulfillment of his destiny, Joseph submitted to authority. As a slave, Joseph submitted to his master. As a prisoner, he submitted to the prison warden. Even in his position of authority as Prime Minister of the most powerful kingdom during his time, Joseph submitted to the authority  of Pharaoh.

Submitting to authority is key to getting us our promotion, but even in our place of authority, we will need to continue to submit to authority. Having submitted to authority during our process of promotion shows that we will be able to submit to authority even in a place of authority.

2. Pass Character Tests

Prior to his final promotion, Joseph passed many Character Tests. Even though the circumstances didn’t seem like they would lead to his destiny, Joseph believed God that God will fulfill the dreams of his life. When Potiphar’s wife seduced Joseph, he did not cave in. Joseph submitted to authority. He was willing to forgive the Cupbearer and his brothers.

Joseph passed these character tests during the process of his promotion. In our journey to fulfill our destinies, it may be a tough ride. We may have difficulty believing that God will fulfill the dreams of our lives. However, these are merely character tests that will prepare us for our promotion. We can do it. We can remain faithful in our place of obscurity. As we pass these character tests, promotion will follow.

Pass character tests

In the corporate world, people are often promoted based on skill and ability. Over time, we have observed that the most capable people at the helm of organisations have failed and there have been accounting scandals that have shocked the world. God on the other hand, is looking for people who are able to pass character tests. God wants to promote us and give us authority and anointing. In order to carry this authority and anointing, we need to develop character that is developed through these character tests. The character that we develop over the process of our promotion will enable us to steward our authority well.

So there you have it, the 2 keys to promotion. Do these well and promotion will follow because it is in submission and with character that we will be able to steward authority.
