I had the pleasure of interviewing Marcella Jones-Penn of Runway Dallas and Marcella Co. on October 12, 2015 about the upcoming event, Runway Dallas: Week of Fashion. Marcella had recently moved back to the DFW area was looking for different avenues to show her collection but could not find any suitable ones. I asked Marcella, “What inspired you to start Runway Dallas: Week of Fashion?” Marcella stated, “The Lord led us to do Runway Dallas.” She started planning in November 2014 and started a meetup group with likeminded people to put Runway Dallas together.
Me: How do you view Dallas in the fashion industry?
Marcella: “Dallas has an amazing potential that I am not sure has been tapped into yet.”
Me: Who is the target audience for Runway Dallas?
Marcella: “Well….being that we have a diverse line up of designers, Pakistani, Indian, New York, LA, Atlanta, and of course the Dallas area, we have menswear, women’s wear, children. The main audience is buyers, but also media and bloggers.” Marcella would also like to eventually franchise Runway Dallas to other cities.
Me: What kind of vibe can attendees expect at the Week of Fashion?
Marcella: “Expecting amazing things to happen. I can’t take credit. This is the Lord’s doing. I’m looking from the outside myself. Come with new goggles on.”
Me: You have a stunning line of clothing with Marcella Co. What is the inspiration behind your brand?
Marcella: “My inspiration comes from the marketplace.” Marcella is also introducing a new line that is a sports collection in which she describes as “easy to wear, but still look good.”
Me: What advice do you have for women who are new to fashion and are trying to establish their own style?
Marcella: “Sticking to who they are. Be confident and be able to express that. Try different things on and see what works. Take baby steps.”
Me: What is the one piece of clothing that you think every woman should have in her closet?
Marcella: “I would have to say dresses. A woman should have a dress and it should probably be black. The little black dress. You heard of the little black dress. I think that is so true.”
