The Promise of Fulfillment

Have you ever felt as though you have given all you have to give?  Do you feel like there is nothing more in the storehouse of your heart set aside for anyone else?  We all feel like that from time to time.  You are not alone.

Most of us drive cars.  Those cars are awesome inventions when cared for properly.  They require gas to move, unless you have an electric car.  If you have an electric car, then the charge will run down until you can plug in somewhere to recharge the battery.  Either way, without the required energy source the car ceases to move when it is empty.  The car doesn't magically replenish itself without an action on our part of some sort.

Our bodies are no different.  We have to eat for nourishment.  What we eat is important because certain foods have no nutritional value and there are foods that harm our bodies instead of help our bodies.  Without the proper nourishment our physical bodies can eventually fail.  The right foods for proper nourishment don't magically appear in our hands for us to eat.  We have to make conscious decisions about the foods we put into our bodies so that we are healthy, so our bodies can work at the levels they are supposed to work.

Is our spiritual health any different?  No, not all. We saw Monday where Jesus offered acceptance regardless of the state we are in.  But can he fulfill the hunger and thirst, and replenish what we deplete throughout each day?

Yes!  Yes, He can!!

John 4:13-14  Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,  (14)  but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

In the verses prior to these in chapter 4, Jesus referred to the water He was talking about as a gift from God.  If asked, He would give Living water unto everlasting life.  What is so amazing about the living water that God gives, is when we drink it we will have no more thirst.  He is also the Bread of life.

John 6:35  And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."

So our souls can be nourished with living water and satisfied with the bread of life.  But see, in the scriptures, we are required to do something:  We are to come to Him and we are to believe in Him. Do you believe in Him?  Do you believe He is able to satisfy you with the bread of life and with living water?  Do you believe He can fulfill the parts of you that feel as though they fail?  The word fulfill in the original language means: completion or what fills.  What are you allowing to fill you?  Do you rely on man to fill you?  To give you the words of love?  You will only be empty again because the words of man are unable to sustain you through the storms of life.

One of the most famous scriptures in the bible is in Isaiah.

Isaiah 40:31  But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Isn't that encouraging? BUT...do you know what came just a couple of verses prior to this?

Isaiah 40:28-29  Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.  (29)  He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.

He gives power to the weak and to those who have no might, He increases strength.  When you feel as though you have no strength to move throughout the day, to deal with that mouthy teenager, to deal with the overbearing boss, or whatever you are dealing with, God can provide the power and strength to you to make it through.  Have you asked Him for the living water that flows from Him?  Have you asked Him to be the bread of life that sustains you and provides you with nourishment?

Psalms 34:8  Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

As women we got very wrapped in who or what is providing the fulfillment we need in our lives.  We look to our husband for validation of their love and affection, of the validation we are good mothers, wives, and housekeepers.  We look to our bosses for a "job well done" and recognition of our efforts.  We continue to look toward these things because they provide instant gratification, which much like a candy bar, provides a brief high only to bring us down again and we begin looking for the next thing to provide us some fulfillment.  When all we need to do is look to the Lord and taste the living water and bread of life that He supplies and see that He is good!  I find it interesting the Psalmist says blessed is the man who trusts in Him.  Is our partaking of the bread of life and living water dependent on our trust in Him?  Yes, I believe it is.  We trust our employer to provide us a paycheck for work we perform and we have no doubt we will receive it.  Why can we not trust God that much?

Jesus Himself went away by Himself and prayed.  Sometimes He went with His disciples.  Jesus knew the importance of recharging in the presence of the Father.  Spend time with the Father.  Spend time in His word and in prayer with Him.  He satisfies and fulfills.  Nothing and no one else can provide us with that fulfillment.
