What is Preterism

Preterism is a view of eschatology that believes many of the prophecies related to the end times were fulfilled in the past, particularly in the events leading up to and including the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD. #preterism

What is Preterism

According to preterism, the prophecies in the New Testament, particularly in the book of Revelation, describe events that were fulfilled in the first century. This includes the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Temple, and the end of the Old Covenant system. Preterists see these events as representing a significant turning point in history, marking the end of the Jewish age and the beginning of the Christian era.

Preterism is divided into two main categories: partial preterism and full preterism. Partial preterists believe that some of the prophecies related to the end times were fulfilled in the past, while others are still to come. Full preterists believe that all of the prophecies were fulfilled in the past and that there is no future “end times” event yet to come.

While preterism has been a minority view throughout much of Christian history, it has gained some popularity in recent years, particularly in academic circles. Proponents of preterism argue that it offers a more historically accurate interpretation of the prophecies related to the end times, and that it avoids some of the problems associated with other views, such as trying to fit current events into a predetermined timeline.

However, preterism has also faced significant criticism from other eschatological views, particularly those that emphasize a future, cataclysmic end of the world. Critics argue that preterism undermines the importance of Christ’s return and the promise of a new heaven and earth, and that it ignores the ongoing spiritual battle between good and evil that is described in the Bible.

Despite these challenges, preterism continues to be an important and respected view within the broader discussion of eschatology. It offers a unique perspective on the events of the past and the future, and challenges Christians to consider the full scope of God’s plan for history and creation.
