Scripture on Rest

Our culture is going at a million miles per hour, anxiety is increasing in so many of us, we are “busy” whenever anyone asks how we are doing, and at the end of the day we find ourselves utterly exhausted.

We are scurrying from place to place always looking down at our phones or watches, barely being able to pay attention to anything for more than 2 seconds. We consume information more than ever, but in short spurts of scrolling and clicking that we never really take anything in.

We are tired.

One of the main reasons I think we are so tired all the time especially for those who follow Jesus is that we are looking to find Rest in all the wrong places. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime can’t be the source of our “rest” as we check out on the couch day after day. We also can’t fool ourselves to thinking how we will find rest when we get our agendas done. They’ll never get done. There will always be more things to do.

Then what are we supposed to do? How can we find rest?

Jesus gives us rest. Jesus shows us how to live. Jesus causes our burdens to be easy and light. So when we walk with heavy shoulders we know we have forgotten about Christ somewhere along the way. Let’s be reminded today of the One who does the heavy lifting for us and the One who can truly give us the rest we need.

Here is what the Bible has to say with Scripture on rest:

Psalm 131:2 – But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

Psalm 37:7 – Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

Exodus 14:14 – The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.

Psalm 46:10 – Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Proverbs 19:23 – The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.

Psalm 4:8 – In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 62:1-2 – For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
