Pray!
He's an Israeli boy. After he read the Shema, I told him to talk to Hashem … to tell Him all the things he wanted.
He asked me, "What things?"
He had no idea what to pray for! I was totally surprised. Who doesn't have a long list of things that he wants?
I told him, "There is a war going on! Jews are (G-d forbid) being captured and killed! Your mother and father… What about their health and livelihood?"
He looked up and spoke to Hashem in his heart. I think it was the first time in his life that he spoke to Hashem … that he ever prayed for the things he feels he needs. He prayed for a long time.
When he finished, I explained how fulfilling a mitzvah creates a "Time of favor", a time that Hashem looks at us more favorably.
I think he took an important lesson with him…, talking to Hashem has become part of his life.
