A man walked up to me at the Kotel and said, "You're the guy who saved the Sefer Torah!" (a Torah scroll)
I had no idea what he was talking about.
He said, "Yeah…thirty-five years ago there was a fire in the Carlebach Shul and you got it put out."
I started to remember what he was talking about. There used to be a small Carlebach shul close to the mikvah. Around one o'clock in the morning I was on my way to the mikvah and when I passed the Carlebach shul I saw a fire had started... maybe from a candle or a menorah? I ran to the nearby police station and told them and they quickly came and put the fire out.
I have no idea how the guy could have recognized me after thirty-five years, or how he even knew me at all, and it took some time for me to remember that it happened. I had completely forgotten about it. And I think that's the first time I heard there was a Sefer Torah there. A nice thing to know… saving a Sefer Torah.
