The ten days of teshuvah: from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur: These are days of mercy and forgiveness, days dedicated to repentance, to examining our inner feelings and, specifically, to amending our ways.
Teshuvah is understood to mean "repentance", but it literally means, "return". What are we returning to? On the surface we are hopefully returning to proper behavior. But what we are actually returning to is much deeper than that.
Each morning we say, "The soul You have given me is pure…" The Jew's soul is an actual portion of Hashem from on high! When we turn from inappropriate acts and follow the Torah, it is to this purity that we are returning.
