I was walking by the Tefillin stand at the Kotel: there was a young man there with tefillin on, bent over a little, reading the Shema… but he had his back to the Kotel.
I gently tapped his arm with one finger to get his attention. He looked up wondering what I wanted. Without saying a word; with one finger I pointed to the Kotel, and then I held my thumb up, reminding him that facing the Kotel was the best way to do the mitzvah.
He got the message right away. He smiled so much that I could see the shape of his lips through his corona mask. He asked Shmuli if he could go to the Kotel with the tefillin. He said, "Sure."
He hurried off to stand close to the Kotel to finish reading the Shema and to talk to Hashem in his heart.
Elevation!
What happened?
He went from a mechanical reading of the Shema to a spiritual opening, realizing where he was, and the significance of what he was doing.
All that without me even having to say a single word. Just one finger to gently tap him, and then to point to the Kotel, and then a thumbs up to remind him of what the Kotel is here for.
It doesn't take much to help someone spiritually… all you really need… is to care.
