Someone posted an article on Facebook about non-Jewish "spiritual" methods to attain unusual "spiritual" experiences. It recommended that Jews should use these methods, even saying that those methods used to be Jewish practices but were lost. It wrote about the "meditation" of spinning your body as the Sufis do, speaking in tongues (well-known from the xians), emptying the mind, and such. A reader sent the article to me for my comment. This is my response:
None of these things have anything to do with the spiritual practice of a Jew. They clear their mind in order to detach from the world and from reality. This is not a Jewish goal. These practices seek ecstasy. We do not seek such a thing, nor would it be a positive experience no more than are drug experiences positive. The Jewish goal is to reveal Hashem's Presence in the world. Spinning and babbling will not do this.
