Propaganda

The insinuation is that two wrongs do, in fact, make a right. In other words, since we "attack" other religions, it is okay for them to continue on their smear campaign against us. However, the "wrong" that they are claiming has yet to occur, because we do not engage in the publishing of anti-Protestant or anti-Catholic propaganda.

When surfing the Internet and looking at sites that deal with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I would estimate that at least half of them are sites published by sectarian religionists who are dedicated to "exposing" the "truth" about us. They offer an unending flow of arguments (many of them regurgitated from other sites) that are nothing more than propaganda. You know, Mormons are really Satanists in secret, Joseph Smith was a Communist, and Satan-worshiping vampires can recharge their life-force by going into the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. (I didn't make that one up, by the way.) Walk through any "Christian" bookstore, and you can't throw a rock without hitting an anti-Mormon book.

However, where are all of the Mormon-authored websites that detail the long and glorious history that the Baptist faith has with the KKK? Where are the Mormon-authored websites giving the gory details of the Spanish Inquisition? Where are the anti-Lutheran books in Mormon bookstores?

They don't exist.

Yes, we believe that our church is the true Church of Jesus Christ, restored to the world. And yes, it would follow that every other church is incorrect. However, we do not need to publish propaganda to make that point, because simply looking at the current situation of the world is enough proof for an honest man. The reason our critics spend so much time and effort attacking us is that they know they cannot answer the questions that we can answer. Thus, the only way to strengthen their position is by undermining ours.

In truth, though we do not agree with all of the beliefs of John Calvin, Martin Luther, John Wesley, St. Francis of Assisi, and Roger Williams, we do not feel the need to destroy their reputations. On the contrary, we continue to refer to all of them as heroic men who did the best they could with what they had. Meanwhile, the sectarian propaganda machine continues to grind away with all sorts of unfounded accusations against Joseph Smith.

There is a big difference between criticism and propaganda. Christ flatly told the Pharisees and Sadducees that they were hypocrites and sinners, but He did so only in passing, and it was never the center of His message. We do not publish propaganda because we do not need to. Our message can stand on its own without the aid of sensationalism, misinformation, or negativity.
