Meeting the Green Ones

There is a root of peace within this Earth.
Plant it in my heart, my home, my land.
That it may grow deeply.
And then will it branch and give shade,
Then will it blossom for the lovers,
And yield fruit that none will lack.
Then will the old sit under its shade and be honored.
And the babies play and laugh into its leaves.
Psalm 50, Earth Psalms by Angela Magara

There is no disputing that our world of humanity is roiling in chaos and suffering. War and rancor fill our media and our minds. We do what we can, but anger and danger are mounting all around us, as is the recklessness of impotence.

Flickering electrons deliver nonstop argument, fury, and grief. We know that too much of this is toxic, and can render us helpless.

As people of spirit, we have prepared our whole lives for these times. Although She, too, is battered and in danger, we know that one antidote to this onslaught of despair is to turn to our Grandmother Gaia.

Teachers, Guardians, and Allies

Now, in this season of Nature’s climactic fulfillment, our forests and gardens have so much to teach us about endurance and resilience. Cascades of falling leaves are reminders of the ending of the sacred year, and the finality of the season of burgeoning life. Death gazes out at us — from the innocent, jolly skeletons decorating our homes to the empty fields where frost and freeze are prompting wildlife to prepare, flee, or hibernate.

The living world of Nature, and in particular the Green Realm, is our teacher and unfailing friend. They instruct us on the eternal cycle of birth, growth, death, and then rebirth. They show us the balance between creativity and surrender, between acceptance and tenacity. They are living proof of Life’s reciprocity.

After all, our exhale is their inhale, and their oxygen gives us life.

For the magically attuned, working with soil and plants is more than collecting the produce they yield. Making friends with the living spirits of trees and flowers can open a doorway into the energies and the sentience of the botanical world. Cultivating an awareness of the Green Ones is an act of co-creation and collaboration with the will of the Divine.

In most spiritual traditions, gardens are viewed as holy places. Since the dawn of civilization, they have been sacred sites for the invocation of the Gods, for contemplation, inspiration, and reflection.

It is no accident that in medieval times, monastery gardens were both utilitarian places that provided food and medicine, as well as havens for prayer.

In Japan and China, blending the wild with the cultivated spaces offers peace, privacy, and a place for meditation. And in the folklore of ancient Britain, magical associations are given to nearly every tree, herb, bush, and flower of the wayside.

To first hear the voices of these beings can be a miraculous, life changing experience. But please bear in mind that such encounters are not reserved for a special few. All humans are invited to find friends, allies, and teachers in the Green realms, for with our every breath, we are already united.

Gardens and farms are magical thresholds between the wildness of Nature, and the structures of humankind.

People through the centuries have discovered that, out among the potatoes and lilacs, their orchards, farmlands, and gardens are a place of power and enchantment. Within them, we can observe the effect of the Moon, the Sun, and the shifting influences of the zodiac on the growth and decline in Nature.

In these blessed places, we can contact beings from other realms who may otherwise be elusive or unknown to us. There, we find those Faerie races that are most comfortable with human interaction, as well as the devas and elementals who are associated with the subtle creative forces of the Earth Herself.

Here you will find solace. Here is where you are always nurtured, loved, and healed. This is where you are shown that life is cyclical, a spiral dance.

Let the rich life run to the roots again.
