Tarot Card of the Week, May 17-23, 2021: Ace of Pentacles

The present convergence of crises––in money, energy, education, health, water, soil, climate, politics, the environment, and more––is a birth crisis, expelling us from the old world into a new.
 Charles Eisenstein

This week, as many of us begin to slowly emerge from our sequestered pandemic life, we are accompanied by the steadying, pragmatic arrival of our friend, the Ace of Pentacles.

The Pentacle is a magical tool that is ruled by the element of Earth and North. The Disc or Pentacle may represent a sacred shield, a coin, or even a scrying mirror of destiny. But its power is to manifest in physical reality that which your imagination (Air), desire (Fire), or heart (Water) may long for.

As with all Aces of the Tarot, this card holds the full potential of its suit. Each Ace shows the hand of the Divine emerging from a cloud and offering a gift.  This Ace is being given from within a garden, that numinous place where the will of Nature and humanity work in harmony, the place from which some of the major religions, sadly, believe we have been exiled and banished.

Interestingly, this is the only Ace that does not portray the yods, the golden symbols of the Divine spark of creativity and genesis. This is because, as Tarot legend Rachel Pollack notes, “The Earth in its completeness and solid reality, bears its own magic.”

Indeed.

Insecurities and Groundedness

For the many, many people who are still out of work in this difficult economy, or who are struggling financially, there is tremendous hope in this card. The Ace of Pentacles is involved with matters that are for our physical well-being and its hand of Grace touches on our prosperity, abundance, health, and security.

However, on Thursday, the Sun says goodbye to earthy Taurus (in tropical astrology), and slides into chatty, tech-savvy Gemini. You might want to take this as a reminder to be Taurus-sensible and prepare for Mercury retrograde next week by doing what our techie Gemini friends always know to do: back up all our devices and data!

In addition, the big player in the stars this week is Saturn. My brilliant friend and cosmic navigator Elisabeth Grace* explains:

Saturn [represents] authority, karma, structure, and necessary controls. It’s slowing down to a virtual standstill, preparing to turn retrograde on Sunday.

In Aquarius, Saturn’s controls are easily expressed in matters related to technology, humanitarianism, and networks. Maybe we’ll see a bit about astrology, too.

Avid Readers will recall that a planet about to change direction functions like a driver leaning on the horn of their car. Matters related to the planet grab our attention!

That said, though, she warns that, as we come up on the second of 2021’s three momentous Saturn-Uranus squares

Many bubbles are likely to pop. The dates of the three Saturn-Uranus squares are Feb 17, Jun 14 and Dec 24. In 2022, we do not have an exact square, but Saturn and Uranus will still be in a tense pattern, especially in the fall.

“Reflecting the potential for disruption in the material flow,” Elisabeth goes on to cite a Bloomberg news story:

World Economy Suddenly Running Low on Everything

Mattress producers to car manufacturers to aluminum foil makers are buying more material than they need to survive the breakneck speed at which demand for goods is recovering and assuage that primal fear of running out. The frenzy is pushing supply chains to the brink of seizing up.

Shortages, transportation bottlenecks and price spikes are nearing the highest levels in recent memory, raising concern that a supercharged global economy will stoke inflation…

Copper, iron ore and steel. Corn, coffee, wheat and soybeans. Lumber, semiconductors, plastic and cardboard for packaging. The world is seemingly low on all of it…

And that’s not counting the Great East Coast Gas Crash of the past couple of weeks.

What Would the Ace of Pentacles Do?

Maybe we could take a fresh look at what “wealth” really means. Business as usual has been sputtering to a seized-up halt for some time, and life as we knew it is not coming back, no matter how much Nike and DuPont and Microsoft want it to.

Instead, we are urged to re-imagine enoughness and understand that we are not here to dominate the Earth (and one another). That path leads to endless war, destruction, and death, as most thoughtful people must surely know by now.

Perhaps we could re-define abundance to be inclusive, not only of one another in the human race, but for all living beings. What if we could learn to tread gently as stewards of this sacred planet, and to use our amazing homo sapiens capacity for inventiveness and creativity to behave as if we are an integral part of the All?

What if we could say goodbye to the wicked old hierarchies, and embrace our kinship to one another, no exceptions?

An Ace in the Material World

How do we “ace” this embodied life, an existence that is completely contingent on our interdependent cooperation? If we have learned nothing else, the COVID pandemic has surely shown us this.

How do we learn to live more lightly and successfully on our planet, without creating cycles of conflict, hoarding, and lack?

On an inner level, this is may be a time to focus on being more centered. As a card of beginnings, what plans and prospects are in your hands, so that your garden may flourish?

This is a golden opportunity to prioritize and tend to the practical matters in your physical world. This could manifest as a new stream of income, improved health, a lifestyle upgrade, or change of address.

If you are considering entering into a contractual agreement of some sort, especially one that can bring you financial rewards, or that perhaps offers a new career direction, this card demonstrates your gateway.

This week, there could be a new start — one that has, in its very structure, the elements for a successful outcome. Could there be a promotion, new job, or inheritance coming for you? Are you considering buying a new home, or upgrading your current dwelling?  The Ace of Pentacles indicates the timing is fortunate.

Additionally, be on the lookout for ways to re-discover the wonders of your physical environment. Perhaps you might begin a new workout regimen, plant your summer vegetable garden (on this waxing Moon), or learn to prepare new kinds of nurturing foods.  You might also like to explore new sensual delights.

This Ace is a bit conservative, and it does not give you a green light for wild risk-taking or crazy spending.  On the contrary, it would advise you to mind your money. But if your investments are sensible, good things are likely.

In what ways might you introduce a new level of comfort, beauty, and solidity to your life?  How can you use this opportunity to improve your sense of abundance and security?  Pay attention to your real assets, the things in this life that matter most and comprise soul-deep wealth.

Build a strong foundation, tend what you value, and fruitful bounty is in your hands. We are all in the midst of a great re-birthing, whether we realize it or not. But by cooperating with and attuning to the wisdom of the Earth Herself, you will discover that Paradise was never lost.

Your garden is here and now.

*A personal note: I just had my annual astrological “check-up” with Elisabeth and I want to tell you all that it was, without exaggeration, superbly life-changing. You will be seeing some big adjustments here on my website (many are already underway), and the direction I am headed. Elisabeth Grace is, in every sense, stellar. – Beth
