A call to pray for President Trump
Whether you love President Trump or loathe him, if you call yourself a Christian, this appeal is for you. All of us, regardless of our background or voting preference, are called to pray for those in authority (see 1 Timothy 2:1-4). Now is the perfect time to pray. We all know that the president is a very strong man, whether you call him stubborn or courageous, bullheaded or brave. Either way, he is as tough as they come. How many others could take on the media the way he does, day and night? …with all his flaws and shortcomings, he is a man with a divinely appointed mission, and he has more work still to do.
Writer touted by CNN as ‘Journalist of the Year’ forced to resign for fabricating stories
The German magazine Der Spiegel revealed Wednesday that one of its top award-winning journalists fabricated many of his articles, inventing characters, sources, and their quotes “on a grand scale” for many years. Claas Relotius, a reporter and editor, admitted to fabricating parts of at least 14 stories following the magazine’s internal investigation. The publication said the issue “marks a low point in the 70-year history of Der Spiegel.” “I am sick and I need to get help,” he reportedly told the magazine.
Trade unions ramp up opposition to Hungary’s ‘slave law’
Brussels, 19 December 2018 (ITUC OnLine): Tens of thousands have taken to the streets in opposition to a new law that imposes drastic measures on working people in Hungary. The contentious law increases the limit on overtime to 400 hours a year and breaches the European Union Working Time Directive. “Hungarians are outraged and they are right. The ‘slave law’ shows the government’s disregard for working people. It gives free reign to employers and allows for unchecked overtime that is blatantly abusive.
Rouhani and Erdogan meet following US decision on Syria
Turkey has been working with Iran and Russia to reach a solution in Syria through the Astana process launched last year. While Trump administration officials have in the past said that US strategy in Syria encompassed a range goals including curbing Iranian influence in the country, Trump tweeted yesterday that defeating ISIS, a mission he said had been accomplished, was his “only reason” for having US troops in Syria.
U.S. Syria-withdrawal decision could throw region into chaos
The US withdrawal of its troops from eastern Syria is an unprecedented move, coming after six months in which Washington had laid the groundwork for a longer-term commitment. US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford recently said that the US had completed training only 20% of the 30,000 local stabilization forces. In addition, the White House, National Security officials, the State Department and the Pentagon have previously suggested that the US would remain in Syria until Iranian-commanded forces leave.
Netanyahu hosts Greek, Cypriot leaders in trilateral meeting 
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is hosting the fifth Israel-Greece-Cyprus summit with Cypriote President Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the National Cyber Directorate and the Carasso Science Park in Beersheba. The summit, focused on cyber and innovation, will see the leaders discuss “regional strategic issues including the plan to lay a gas pipeline from Israel to Europe and additional cooperation projects…”

Fed raises rates despite Trump opposition
The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates again, in spite of warnings from Donald Trump against the move. Officials at the US central bank voted to lift the Fed’s key interest rate by 0.25%, to a target range of 2.25%-2.5%. But they also said future increases could come at a slower pace amid concerns about global growth.
Nasa hack exposes space agency staff’s data
Nasa has emailed its staff to warn them that hackers may have stolen their personal details. The message said it suspected that two of its servers containing details of past and present employees had been compromised. It added that it did not believe any Nasa mission had been put in jeopardy. One expert noted that this was the latest in a series of breaches experienced by the space agency to have been made public since 2011.

A scathing report from Attorney General Lisa Madigan finds the number of Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse against children in Illinois is much higher than previously acknowledged.
