What Happened to My Church?
Church issues are the most frequent inquiry I get here at Olive Tree Ministries. Other leaders tell me the same. What has happened in the last 30-40 years? Many people visit church after church only to walk away disheartened. Others are lifetime members of a church and have seen changes that left it unrecognizable — spiritually speaking. At first, members and attendees wonder if they are being a bit too judgmental, but the sad reality eventually sinks in that something has gone terribly wrong.
Tropical Storm Florence approach prompts state-of-emergency declaration in North Carolina
Tropical Storm Florence drew closer to the East Coast overnight and was expected to reach hurricane strength Sunday — possibly becoming a major hurricane thereafter, forecasters said early Saturday. The approaching storm prompted North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper to declare a state of emergency, a step that makes resources available for addressing the storm’s effects.
Philippines earthquake – strong 6.1-magnitude shaker hits second largest island of Mindanao
A HUGE earthquake measuring 6.1 in magnitude has shaken the Philippines’ second largest island today, the US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage from the quake, which hit the east coast of Mindanao – in the south of the country.
Jewish Holidays, But No Jews Allowed on Temple Mount
Rosh Hashanah begins Sunday evening and ends Tuesday evening. The second day of the Jewish holiday coincides with the Arabic Hijri New Year. Though not considered a major Muslim holiday, the Israel Police has decided that Hijri takes precedence over the Jewish holiday and have closed the Temple Mount to Jews.
Iranian artillery targets Kurdish group in Iraq 
Iranian artillery struck a Kurdish camp in northern Iraq, targeting Iranian Kurds and the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), a group that opposes the Iranian regime. According to the Koya department of health in a nearby city at least five Kurds were killed and 30 wounded in the attack. The artillery bombardment is a major escalation by Iran and is the first time that Iranian artillery has struck deep inside Iraqi territory since 1996.
Swedish election: PM says voting for anti-immigration SD is ‘dangerous’
Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has begun the final day of the general election campaign by warning about extremism and fascism. Neither his centre-left Social Democrats nor the main centre-right party is likely to win a majority. The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) is expected to win around 20% of the vote, becoming the second biggest party in parliament.
Russia ‘tried to spy on France in space’ – French minister
The French defence minister says a Russian spy satellite got close to a Franco-Italian satellite last year and tried to intercept its transmissions. “It’s called an act of espionage,” Florence Parly said, calling the Russian satellite a Luch-Olymp. France acted to keep the Athena-Fidus satellite’s communications safe, she said. It enables the French and Italian armies to exchange secret intelligence.
Syria war: ‘Russian strikes’ target Idlib as offensive looms
Russian war planes have launched fresh strikes on the Syrian province of Idlib, a monitor says, as talks in Tehran failed to stop an impending military offensive there. The raids targeted rebel-held positions in Idlib’s south-west, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Syrian forces, backed by Russia and Iran, are poised to attack the last major rebel stronghold in Syria.

China’s record trade surplus with U.S. adds fuel to trade war fire
China’s trade surplus with the United States widened to a record in August even as the country’s export growth slowed slightly, an outcome that could push President Donald Trump to turn up the heat on Beijing in their cantankerous trade dispute. The politically sensitive surplus hit $31.05 billion in August, up from $28.09 billion in July, customs data showed on Saturday, surpassing the previous record set in June.
North Carolina challenges ‘unreasonable’ U.S. subpoenas for voter data
North Carolina’s elections board voted on Friday to challenge federal subpoenas seeking years’ worth of voter information from state and local officials, saying the timing, scope and unknown nature of the inquiry were cause for concern. The U.S. Justice Department on Aug. 31 issued the subpoenas on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the state board and as many as 44 county elections boards in eastern North Carolina.
