ASKING FROM THE TOP?

    By Pastor Enoch Adeboye
Memorise: “Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off” (Psalm 138:6)

Read: 2 Kings 5:9-12

Elisha heard how the Israeli king tore his royal robe into shreds for fear that the king of Syria was seeking an occasion for war with them, so he invited Naaman over to his house. Naaman came with pomp and pageantry. He came with fine horses and chariots and was decorated with his uniform as a general. He got to Elisha’s house but felt it was not presentable enough so he stayed outside. He was the one in need of help yet he was the one exhibiting pride.

With all the things he was proudly displaying, he was still a leper. Without Jesus Christ, a sinner is still a sinner no matter how highly placed he is. Sin in the life of a sin is worse than leprosy, hence a sinner is worse than a leper. Every sinner is far removed from God except the fellow takes advantage of the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. Isaiah 1:18 says, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool”.

This talks of the efficacy of the blood of Jesus Christ. What is meant here is that even if one’s sins have been doubly immersed into the deep coloured dye of the coccus worm meant to give it a permanent fix, it can be restored to its original whiteness. The blood of Jesus can both deal with the colour and texture of sin. This means, no matter what sin you have committed, there is forgiveness for you if you can sincerely come to Jesus and ask for cleansing by His blood today.

Another lesson here has to do with attitude. Pride and blessing never go together. Psalm 138:6 says, “Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off”. The spirit of pride can never walk in agreement with our God. Never! As high as God is, He will only regard the lowly or humble seeker. You cannot seek God if you feel too big, too knowledgeable or too wise.

As long as you cannot come down from your high tower to meet God at the lowly place, you may never meet Him. Whenever you are seeking God’s blessing, align your ways with His. Humble yourself. Forget how important people say you are. Come to Him as a nobody – someone who is helpless, hopeless and impoverished. Call out to Him with humility and He will hear you. Some people cannot get their desires, not because they are not asking, but because they are asking from a high place instead of the lowly place.

Humility is key to receiving from God.
