Rules of Tahajjud Prayer

What is Tahajjud Prayer in Islam?
Prophet Muh’mmad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam said:  The best salat after the ones which are made obligatory is Tahajjud Salat. [Ahmad]
 It is reported that the Prophet PBUH said : ‘When the last one-third of the night remains, our Lord, the Glorious One descends towards the heaven of the earth and proclaims: Who is that who supplicates for Me, and I grant his supplication? Who is that who begs Me for anything and I grant it to him? And who is that who seeks My forgiveness, and I forgive him?’ (Bukhari, Muslim).
Tahajjud’s literally means ‘wake up’ and due to, it is offered at mid night (After Isha and before Fajr Prayer), it is necessary to have a deep sleep before offering Tahajjud, which is the fundamental issue to be taken as start. Tahajjud Prayer is not compulsory on Muslims, i.e. infact Tahajjud is an voluntary prayer (Namaz).
How to Wake up for Tahajjud Prayer?
A person remarked to Abdullah bin Abbas [Radhi ALLAHU Anhu],“I always intend awakening in the last portion of the night to perform Salaat but sleep overpowers me.
” Ibne Abbas [Radhi ALLAHU anhu] replied,
“Before sleeping recite from “Qul Law Kaanal Bahru Midadal…” to the end of Surah Kahf. ALLAH Ta’ala will waken you at whatever time you intend rising.” [Tha'labi-Ma'ariful Quraan vol 5]
Method to perform Tahajjud Prayer (Night Prayer)
from The Sunnah of Prophet Muh’mmad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam
  1. First of all, make sure that you had a deep sleep after Ishah prayer and wake up before Fajr prayer so that you could be able to perform Tahajjud prayer before fajr. Remember, you cannot pray Tahajjud in obligatory prayer times, i.e. during Ishah time and Fajr time. The time of praying Tahajjud Must be offered between Ishah and Fajr, i.e. at midnight or 3rdhalf of the night.
  2. Perform Wudu
  3. Now, be prepared mentally to perform Tahajjud prayer by making intention to perform it with pure mind and pure intention. So perform two Raka’hs (Rakaats) prayer in a same manner you pray Fajr prayer, the only thing different is your intention for Tahajjud prayer. Finally, finish the prayer with the salam. Make a dua whatever you want to do but in beautiful and pure words and ask ALLAH Subhana Wa Ta’ala Subhanahu Wata A’la. Your desire should be legitimate. It would more good if you can cry and show your tears to ALLAH Subhana Wa Ta’ala Subhanahu Wata A’la from the core of your heart.
  4. Step by step in short:I. Sleep after Ishah at any time;II. Woke up at midnight early before Fajr;
    III. Prepare to pray Tahajjud before Fajr time starts;
    IV. Perform Wudu;
    V. Find a clean place;
    VI. Take a direction to Kaba;
    VII. Start offering two Rakahs of Tahajjud;
    VIII. Finish the prayer with a salam; and
    IX. Make a dua, recommended.
Rules of Tahajjud Prayer
  • The minimal night Tahajjud prayer is 2 raka’ahs. [Hindiyya, quoting Fath al-Qadir];
  • The number of raka’ahs performed by Nabi [SallALLAHU Alaihe Wasallam] varied according to the prevailing circumstances. Although on certain occasions sufficient time was available, Nabi [SallALLAHU Alaihe Wasallam] would perform less raka’ahs reciting lengthy Qiraat.[Khasa'ile Nabawee p 156]. Deducing from the various narrations four to twelve raka’ahs in units of two or four have been recommended. [Imdaadul Fatawa vol 1 -Baab finnawaafil / Maraqiyul Falah], However if two raka’ahs are performed in the prescribed time it will be regarded as Tahajjud.[Raddul Mukhtaar vol 1 p 715].
  • Tahajjud is a nifl prayer, you would make the intention that you are going to pray Tahajjud two raka’ah and you are going to perform this prayer normally the way you would usually do in any two raka’ah of prayer.
  • There is no prescribed verses to recite for Tahajjud Prayer. You can recite any verse from the Holy Quran for Tahajjud Prayer.
Five (5) Benefits of Tahajjud Prayer

Based on Chapter 7 in  Du’a; The Weapon of the Believer by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi
  1. ALLAH Zille Shanahu describes the true believers as those who: ‘…and, in the hours of dawn, they seek forgiveness from their Lord…’  Surah Al-Dhariyat, Ayah 18.
    The distinction between a believer and one who is just a Muslim is further defined by this act.
  2. The doors of Mercy and Forgiveness are open during the last 1/3 of night:
    Proof: Hadeeth
    Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (Ppeace and Blessings of ALLAH Zille Shanahu Be Upon Him) said:
    Our Lord descends every night, during the last third of it, to the skies of this world, and asks: ‘Who is making du’aa to me, so that I can respond to him?  Who is asking Me, so that I can give him?  Who is asking for My forgiveness, so that I can forgive him?’
    Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah
  3. If a person wishes his/her Du’aa to be accepted this is the best time to ask as shown in hadeeth above.
  4. Huge incentive for the believer to wake up when everyone else is asleep and remember ALLAH Zille Shanahu privately.
  5. ALLAH Zille Shanahu favored this time over other times and ALLAH Zille Shanahu distinguised this timing so that the worshipper can eagerly anticipate this time and pray earnestly and sincerely; The worshipper should ensure his/her du’aa is more frequent and sincere during these times.
What ALLAH Subhanahu Wata A’ala Says About Tahajjud Prayers in The Quran-e-Kareem

ALLAH Ta’ala says, addressing Nabi [SallALLAHU Alaihe Wasallam],
“O you wrapped in a cloth, Stand [in prayer] by night except a portion, half of it or a little less, or a little more, and recite the Quraan in measured tones. Soon shall we send down to you a weighty message. Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing the soul, and most effective in speech [of praises and prayer]. [73:1-6]

In an Ayah, ALLAH Zille Shanahu says,
“[The believers are those] whose sides remain away from their beds, while they call on their Lord with fear and hope. ” [32:16]
In another Ayah, ALLAH Ta’ala says,
“And spend a portion of the night with the Quraan, as an additional prayer.” [17:79]
In another Ayah, ALLAH Ta’ala says,
“As for the Righteous, they will be in the Gardens and fountains [of Jannah], with joy the rewards which their Lord gives them, before this [in the world] they were virtuous. They slept but little at night, and they prayed for forgiveness in the hours of early dawn. ” [51:15:18]

Another Wazifa for Laziness and Tiredness
In Urdu & English:
The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) used to make a du’a:
Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA INNI A’UZU BIKA MINAL HAMMI WAL HAZANI, WA A’UZU BIKA MINAL AJZI WAL KASALI, WA’A UZU BIKA MINAL JUBNI WAL BUKHLI,  WA A’UZU BIKA MIN GALABATIDDAINI WA QAHRIRRIJALI
Narrated Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say, “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice and feeble old age; I seek refuge with You from afflictions of life and death and seek refuge with You from the punishment in the grave.” Sahih al-Bukhari
Why is this du’a important? For two reasons:
  • Laziness is an attribute of munafiqeen. If this wasn’t bad enough, being lazy leads to procrastination, which leads to its own set of problems.
  • It’s common these days for people to say “I can’t do it.” Like “I can’t pray at work,” or “I can’t achieve X.” The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say a’oothubillah to that kind of talk. Think about it!
