This Book review explores In Search of Wisdom by Joyce Meyer. I have always loved the book of Proverbs, because some of the verses sound exactly like words I have heard my grandmother say all my life. For example, “Whoever spares the rod hates their child, Proverbs 13:24” (Grandma was a big believer in discipline), and “Quickest way to be someone’s servant is to borrow from them  – Proverbs 22:7” (Grandma, taught us not to borrow a dime from anyone). This is what makes this book an amazing one. 

In Search of Wisdom: Life Changing Truths in the Book of Proverbs

This book is filled with practical wisdom culled or curated from the book of Proverbs. Each chapter is dedicated to on chapter of the book of Proverbs. The chapters are then divided into lessons to learn from that chapter. For example, the first lesson in chapter 6 is ‘Don’t Cosign for Someone’s Debt’. Sound advice if I ever heard one.

Any one who is an avid fan of Judge Judy, like I am, knows the legal ramifications and consequences of cosigning for anyone. Regardless of how much you trust the person you have signed for, they may not be able to cover their debt, which will leave you responsible for it. Essentially, do not obligate yourself for someone else’s debt. This is the lesson in Proverbs 6:1-5.  Isn’t it amazing that the Bible has such amazingly practical advice?

Recommend or Not

This book does not read like a sermon, but more like a collection of sage, practical, day to day lessons one would get from an elder relative. The great thing is that it is based on the word of God. I definitely recommend this book. It is a great read and I am looking forward to going through it again. Don’t forget to get a copy here.
