Salt of the Earth

As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, “God bless your mother—the womb from which you came, and the breasts that nursed you!” Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”

—Luke 11:27-28

As I was talking to someone the other day, I said to them that a global Pandemic was a perfect time when those who know God could have been of great solace to others. Of course everyone was and still is affected by the fear-induced environment caused by a pandemic. However, as I was saying to the person that day, who is better to spread the formulas of faith and courage than those who know God and who put his principles into practice? Even while the initial fear of the global pandemic has subsided, there is still a need for truth and direction in these uncertain times. Who is better to offer that to the world than you?

The Bible says in Matthew 5:13 that we are the Salt of the earth. This means that while other people might be the meat, the potatoes, the greens, or the rice, none of that is going to taste any good unless you are there to season it. Your role is to offer flavor to an all-too-often flavorless world through the principles of knowledge and truth that are rooted at the core of what you believe—your normal. The presence of what we have to offer as Believers can completely change the trajectory and flavor of many people’s lives. It can shift others from emptiness and hopelessness to empowerment and boldness.

As Jesus was giving us an example of this in the Bible verses above, he responded to a woman who pronounced a blessing on his mother for birthing him. Jesus accepted the blessing but stated an important fact: a person is even more blessed [rewarded, happy, exalted] when they “hear the word of God and put it into practice.” Romans 10:17 says “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” How many people have negative faith because the words they are constantly hearing induce fear and paranoia instead of happiness and hope? In your natural state of being, you have the ability to help others, to not only hear God’s word but to also put it into practice. Know what you have to contribute and always show up knowing your identity: you are the salt of the earth.

Lots of Love, XO
