WHY CHRISTIANS DON’T SPEAK IN TONGUES

The Tongue is the most immediate significant physical manifestation of the baptism of the Holy Ghost. However, not everyone baptized with the Holy Ghost that actually speaks in tongues. This is due to so many factors which we will be looking at in this teaching.

Let’s pray

Eternal Father, we thank you for the light which you will be shading on the reason for not speaking in tongues after the baptism of the Holy Ghost. We pray for the grace to overcome them and to experience this wonderful gift of the Holy Ghost in Jesus name.

Amen!

The baptism of the Holy Ghost is only for the children of God. Anyone who is not born again (saved) can’t receive this gift of the Holy Ghost because such a person can’t receive the Holy Ghost.

The tongue is a gift of the Holy Ghost. The Bible says in Acts 10:44-46, while Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.  All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. The other believers were able to know that these ones have received the Holy Ghost through the gift of tongues.

It is the Holy Ghost in a Christian that gives this gift of His (The ability to speak in tongues) to the believer. Without the Holy Ghost present in a Christian, he has no hope of ever speaking in tongues.

The Holy Ghost doesnt compel us to speak in tongues. He gives us utterance. The speaking of the utterance He has given us is our responsibility, not His. If you don't utter it, the gift will never benefit you even though you have it.
.
The gift of tongues isn’t for some. There’s no one left out in the gift of tongues. Once baptized with the Holy Ghost the gift of tongues is given on you.

The question is:

Why do most Christians don’t speak in tongues after the baptism of the Holy Ghost?

1.   They don’t believe in the gift of tongues.

As strange as it appears, most Christians who believe in the ministry of the Holy Ghost don’t believe in the gift of tongues. They believe that the gift of tongues isn’t for our generation.

To them, the word of God fluctuates with the times and the season. But what does the bible says:

Forever, O LORD,
Your word is settled in heaven.

Psalms 119:89 (NASB)

The word of God is unchangeable from generation to generation. If God said He is going to do something, nothing has the capacity to change God from doing it. God doesn’t change, its man that change.

Apostle Peter let us understand in the book of 1st Peter 1:23-25 that the same word which gave birth to us in God and sustains that life is the same word that went ahead of us to give us the Holy Ghost with its gift.

For you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For,
"ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS,
AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS.
THE GRASS WITHERS,
AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER."
And this is the word which was preached to you.

1 Peter 1:23-25 (NASB)

You can’t believe in the gift of tongue and not speak in tongues when baptized with the Holy Ghost.

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Mark 16:17 (KJV)

The gift of tongues automatically follows those who are baptized with the Holy Ghost. It’s automatic, you do nothing beyond believing.

You believe it, you manifest it.

2.   They’re ashamed of the gift.

Many people who are baptized with the Holy Ghost are ashamed of identifying with the gifts of the Holy Ghost openly. This is most times due to how they treated those whom they witnessed manifesting such gift when they were yet unsaved.

They think of what others will say of them would they see them manifesting the gift of tongues. The shame of people laughing at them makes them not to desire the gift of tongue.

When the apostles got baptized with the Holy Ghost at the upper room, the bible said the people who witnessed this great sight mocked them (Acts 2:13). People make a mockery of what they don’t understand.

You can’t avoid the mockery without avoiding the glory.

The glory of the kingdom of God is packaged in the mockery of the word. To be ashamed of the gift of the tongue is to be ashamed of the glory that comes with it.

For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

Luke 9:26 (KJV)

Whatever you are ashamed of, you are not qualified to manifest. What you’re ashamed of, you’ve not understood yet.

If you’re ashamed of the gift of tongues, your understanding of the gift of tongues is still very much limited.

Understanding is man’s major source of boldness.

You can’t have a good understanding of a subject and be ashamed to declare it. Paul said in Romans 1:16, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.

Galatians 1:15-17 (KJV)

Paul had a revelation of the power of the gospel of Christ. God enlightened the mind of his understanding to see the power of the gospel to save. He lost every inhibition to the proclamation of the gospel.

What you are ashamed to declare, God will be ashamed to confirm.

3.   They want to speak what they understand.

Another reason most people who are baptized with the Holy Ghost don’t speak in tongues is that they want to speak what they understand.

Tongues we said earlier is a gift. The giver determines what tongues to give. The receiver isn’t in any position to determine what tongue to receive. Most believers want to determine what tongue to receive that is the reason they never receive any.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:4 (KJV)

The Apostles and those who have received the Holy Ghost didn’t speak what they wanted to speak but what they were given. The utterance the Holy Ghost gives is what the receiver speaks.

What was given to them wasn’t what they understood. People of different tribes and nations heard and understood what the apostles were saying in their own language as the spirit gave the apostles utterance but the Apostles didn’t (Acts 2:5-12). They were also men who came from the same places with the Apostles who didn’t understand what the Apostles were saying and they mocked the gift (Acts 2:13).

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:2 (KJV)

The gift of tongues is an unknown tongue. It is unknown to men but known to God the giver. God only makes it known to men at His own discretion and time.

Anyone who wants to speak the tongues he understands will never speak in tongues.

4.   They want to speak something different from others.

The tongue is a gift by the Holy Ghost. He may decide to give you the same tongue He has given to your friend. It’s left to you to reject it or accept it. If you reject it because your friend speaks it or because it’s rampant, you will never speak in tongues.

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:11-13 (KJV)

The spirit of God not only knows the will of God concerning us, He also knows our own needs. Knowing these things, the Holy ghost knows the right word to use in conveying our needs to God.

The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:26 (KJV)

There are things we don’t know and can’t address which the Holy Spirit knows and want to take care of. He is in the best position to know what method or utterance to use in taking care of the issue. Our interference will not only limit His move but also the result.

Let me share a testimony with you.

One day I was meditating on a few scriptures as I was going to work. Along the way, I began to hear some noise inside my spirit. It was as if someone was talking inside me. The person wasn’t actually talking to me but he was talking about something.

What he was saying was interrupting my thought and that created noise in my spirit. The scriptures I was meditating on and the thing this voice inside me was saying was creating some noise in my spirit.

So, I decided to listen to what this voice was saying. As I listened, I saw that the voice was praying against my being arrested by some uniform men. He wasn’t specific about the uniform men that will try to arrest me.

As a child of God, I tried to wave it off that such thing can’t happen to me. But the voice said distinctively, “You didn’t start the prayer, why not finish it?” I concluded it and continued with my meditation and the voice ceased.

When I was returning home, I came to a place where the government has stopped citizens from crossing the road. Citizens were now directed to take a footbridge. I was engrossed in thought that I forgot to take the footbridge.

I stepped down from the culvert to the road and was waiting to cross when I began to hear the noise of people behind me shouting. I didn’t turn because I was rushing home and didn’t want to be distracted.

All of a sudden someone tapped me on the shoulder and when I turn he asked me if I didn’t hear the shout. He said the man that was standing close to you has been arrested by the task force the government put in place to take in those that cross the road at that point. He concluded with this, “I don’t know why they haven’t arrested you.”

I went back and took the footbridge.

Now, if the Holy Spirit hadn’t interceded in prayer for me, I would have been arrested. But He seeing it ahead began to meditate for me the right way to stop it.

The Holy Spirit is our helper. He knows the right way to assist us.

As I said earlier, only the saved that can be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

This is an opportunity to be saved. To make Jesus the Lord of your life and be qualified for the baptism of the Holy Ghost, make the following prayer with me from the depth of your heart with all sincerity.
