What Are Your Preconceived Ideas?

Tags: jesus truth idea

PRESUMPTION-

an idea that is taken to be true, and often used as the basis for other ideas, although it is not known for certain.

"underlying presumptions about human nature"

  • an act or instance of taking something to be true or adopting a particular attitude toward something, especially at the start of a chain of argument

  • Preconceive-(as in '' notion, idea)to form a conception or opinion of beforehand, as before seeing evidence or as a result of previously held prejudice.

HOW MANY OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS DO YOU BELIEVE ARE TRUE?

The Earth revolves around the Sun -    https://www.livescience.com/33700-bulls-charge-red.html

Frankenstein is the name of a monster in the book titled Frankenstein -https://www.livescience.com/33700-bulls-charge-red.html

Bulls hate the color red-  https://www.livescience.com/33700-bulls-charge-red.html

Every statement above is false. Does that surprise you? We are likely to accept something as a fact if we have heard it constantly affirmed throughout our lifetime. But that does not make it so. Depending on the type of falsehood, it could seriously affect our lives. And unlearning something we've always accepted as fact is a difficult but necessary process.

The Jewish people had preconceived ideas about their messiah. They had studied the Old Testament yet many of them did not truly discern the truth within it's pages. They decided to invent their own image of the foretold messiah.

The Jews speaking in John 6 didn't believe Jesus was born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) and sent from God:

41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

Earlier in the same chapter Jesus knew some of the men planned to make Him king by force:

14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

These Jews were looking for a charismatic leader to deliver them from Roman bondage. They did not understand or accept the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. Read more here.  He was already the King of Kings- but the first time He came to save the lost by preaching the good news of His kingdom, and dying on the cross for us.

36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.   John 18

Do you believe Pilate wanted to know the truth? Wouldn't he have stood and listened to Jesus' answer if he'd been serious about the question? Besides that, he said he couldn't find any thing against Jesus Christ and despite it he gave Him over to be crucified. We cannot be neutral about Him. We are either for or against Jesus!

Even Peter had preconceived or presumptuous ideas about Jesus:

21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  Matthew 16

We have all been guilty of the same offense. We think we know something for a fact and then we learn that we didn't know it like we thought we did. (Read I Corinthians 8:2)  You might say-"But this was Jesus Christ that Peter was trying to correct or reprove. How could he be so arrogant or overbearing toward Him? Well, when we are self-willed and full of pride then we do the same thing by rejecting the Light and Truth He has taught us.

Preconceived Idea of Man's Power or Ability

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?  Luke 12

                                        PRECONCEIVED IDEA OF GOD'S CHARACTER

16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?

17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee.

18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.

19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.

20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.  Psalm 50

Presumption of Wisdom

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.  Romans 1

God knows the thoughts and motives of our hearts. We need to allow His Spirit and Word (which always agree) to search us and filter out preconceived mind-sets that hinder us from seeing and accepting truth. After all Jesus' truth is what makes us free!
