The High Calling of Motherhood is an excellent reminder of not only the importance of motherhood, but the struggles, fears and yes, even humor, that comes with being a mother.
None of us is perfect…some of us less perfect than others (speaking personally here!)…but this Book reminds us that, even with our mistakes and imperfections…we are not alone! And books like this one give us insight and perspective and help us through all the struggles we go through.
I felt, after reading this, that I wasn’t alone! One of her early questions, “are you embracing motherhood” led me to some serious introspection. I wasn’t! I was a mom but I hadn’t embraced my role the way I should have prior to my relationship with Jesus. It was something I “did” but it wasn’t who I “was”. That is different today, but it was the reality of my past. I loved my kids more than anything, but, through reading this book, I realized I never felt worthy of them. I was ill-equipped, I was untrained with no examples. I didn’t know HOW to mother. Not until Jesus. And even then, it continues to be a great learning experience. This book definitely went a long way to help with that experience!
In the book the author states:
“Often the joy of motherhood vanishes when we don’t fully grasp the value and significance of the influence we have in motherhood. We get caught up in a culture of comparison and self-serving gratification, neglecting to understand the mission of motherhood.”
The part that got me was “when we don’t fully grasp the value and significance of the influence we have in motherhood.” When you are ill-equipped for motherhood, without examples, you can easily fail to recognize your value in the role. It is something that has been a difficult road for me to circumnavigate but books like this make it an easier road to travel.
I recommend this book HIGHLY…whether you are Super Mom or whether, like me, you are just trying to figure it all out. I wish I had this book decades ago!!
