The late E. Gene Smith has done a lot to make dharma accessible to Westerners today and a key figure in the modern history Western Buddhism. Smith set up shop in Dharmsala in the 50s and began collecting, preserving, and cataloging a huge volume of original sutras smuggled out by Tibetan refugees.
